Opening up the trans am's hood scoop
Anyone make a cool way to make the carburetor suck in air only through the trans am cowl?
I want to make a cool one. I saw one that was sheet metal and foam, but I want a sweeter one than that. It looked a little cheap. Any advice. I have done sooo much research, and come up with nothing. I have a 14" drop base edelbrock cleaner.
If any of you have pictures, it would be cool.
I have been thinking of using a painting scoop thing. Ya know, the plastic things you use for the rollers. That is shiny and cool looking. Just put that on the air cleaner some how, and add some foam to get good suction. It should work, right?

I used 4" stainless dryer tubing and a stainless dish with the rubber off the door on a old camaro to seal it to the scoop base (that is with a LT1 but may help you with an Idea) you could possibly use the wall mount exhaust for a dryer I have seen them at the home depot for about $25.00 they are stainless and that is what I got the Idea for mine from.

have you looked into the factory 82-84 funtional ram air set ups? they had a plastic scoop that bolted to the hood and an air cleaner lid with a hole that sealed to the scoop when you closed the hood. they originally had a solenoid that opened a flapper valved when you floored it so it could suck in the extra air, but i took out the flapper so it would suck the extra air in constantly. made a REAL BIG difference in my car. i may have that whole set-up somewhere. i know i have the the scoop for the hood, i just need to locate the air cleaner lid.

This is kinda a reply to Fast3rdGen, but I'm purdy sure the scoop youre talkin about was offered only on the 82 and 83 crossfire camaros. My 83 xfire has that nifty li'l scoop. When i floor it those two flaps open up, and you can hear the difference that air being forced down the two throttle bodies makes. The flapper looks like its shaped to aim the air down into the throttle bodies and bypass the air cleaners. Because of the way it's shaped it seems like it actually redirects the air downward, like the front valence redirects air towards the radiator, only in the opposite direction so it might be a good idea to keep the flappers on there. Course i could be talkin outta my *** here too. It looks nifty, it works, and best of all, it came STOCK. Sorry for being so long winded.
Matt
ps: just outta curiosity, does anyone know how to rig the solenoid you you can open the flappers with a switch? Thanks

Ive got it. I am going to put an aluminum plate sealing off the inside of the hood where the scoop is. I am going to get an air cleaner assembly that completely encases my edelbrock drop base air cleaner. Then I am going to cut complimentary holes between the aircleaner and the new plate covering the scoop. A little weather stripping, and I will have an induction that doesn't look as ugly as the sheet metal one that I originally saw that started my quest.
I went to this car show today, and that is the set up some girl put on her cavy. Why waste the design time on a 4 cyl. is beyond me, but the idea was great. I am going to steal the concept now, and call it my own. Hey, take what works, right?
Whenever I get the set up done, I will post the pic on this thread. You will all probably be subscribed still so you can see what I have done and improve on it.
