switched to q jet now wont run
i had an edelbrock 600 in my 87 camaro with a 72 350. the edelbrock sucked so i been reading everybody talkin about upgrading the q jet. i had a non cc q jet layin around so i rebuilt it and put ck rods and a b hanger in. i put the carb on and ran the fuel line to where the filter is right in front. i get nothing, no gas smell or anything.i took the filter out tried again and still get nothing. then i decided to run the fuel line directly under where the filter is where it looked like the pcv hose was supposed to go but i have no pcv so i dont know about that. it started puttering but wouldnt stay running. then i noticed gas leaking from where the vaccuum is right under where the choke stat is. so i put the gas line there and the car started and reved to 3000rpm. i got scared and shut it off. can anybody fill me in on how this should be hooked up. thanks
forgot to mention it'll fire up if i spray starting fluid in the top of the carb, and when i disconnect the fuel hose from where the filter is theres alot of pressure, it hisses then fuel leaks out. is there something that can block fuel from entering where the filter is, i took the filter out and the little rubber piece that came off the filter.
i tried adjusting the float and i set it at 15/32. when i took the carb apart again there was fuel all around where the float is so i know the bottom of the carb is getting fuel but its not reaching the top. i sprayed some starting fluid in the top of the carb and it started and raced to 3000 rpms and then died, then i seen some fire. im stumped the top of the carb isnt getting any fuel can somebody tell me why, thanks
well i have an edelbrock 600 in my 82 and the damn thing runs alot better then the qjet. try and put ur edelbrock back on and see if u have any problems with that and if none show then just turn in both the adjuster screws all the way and then back them each other 1/4 to 1/2 a turn and try and start the car and do it till the car starts and after its running turn it another 1/4 to 1/2 turn again while its runing and it should be good. thats what we did with my carb even though right out of the box my carb ran fine even though it was runing a bit rich, i just turned it down and then my brother told me about the 1/4 to 1/2 turn. then we did that and its been running great. i turned it a bit awhile ago to make it a bit richer becuz of it being cold out but thats it.
OK. First off, stop running the fuel line to the PCV fitting. You're going to do serious damage to your motor.
Your stock QJet shoud at least start and run the engine, even if it's a bit screwed up. Hook up the fuel line to the correct fuel inlet again and crank the engine for a while. Now shut off the motor and look down the primary venturis. Manually pump the accelerator and look for 2 little jets of fuel to squirt out every time you open the throttle. If so, you're getting fuel into the carb at least. Try it and report back.

i didnt run the fuel line to the pcv on the valve cover i ran it to the carb where u would run the pcv hose. i figured i couldnt screw it up any worse then it was. and when i ran the fuel line there the car fired up then died. when i had the fuel line running where it was supposed to go all i got was cranks. if i pump the accelerator i get nothing no squirts of gas. but if i take the carb apart theres gas all around the float. i took the edelbrock off because not only did it backfire through the carb all the time also the secondaries would only open when they wanted to ( not vaccuum ) beacuse of that little piece on the linkage that locks the secondaries, i also had octane knock if i ran anything under 93 octane. i shouldnt have to run 93 all the time my motor isnt extream at all. i knew the carb was holding me back when i lost to a stock firebird carbed lg4 with free mods and a straight pipe. and i got an 87 camaro with a 72 350, edelbrock performer intake, edelbrock fuel pump, edelbrock 14" air cleaner, ported heads, dynomax shortie headers, flowmaster american thunder cat back with custom y pipe, th350 tranny with b@m stage 2 shift kit, 3.42 gears. in the end i ruled out the carb.

so ur sayin that u connected the fuel line to where the hose from the pvc goes right? why dont u try puttin the fuel line where its suposed to go and then check ur entire ignition system. becuz if its cranking, test for spark and if theres spark then u have another problem with gettin enuff fuel into the carb.
its not the ignition system because the car ran 3 days ago with the edelbrock carb on there. im gonna clear eveything up, i tried the q jet to see if i would get any gain with it opened to 750cfm, i didnt take the edelbrock off because it was broken, the car ran witht the edelbrock but it felt like it was holding me back and doing all that other crap that i said it was doing in the other post. as for the q jet i didnt hook it up to the wrong spot on the carb and left it there, i tried it in few diffenet spots on the carb but it always ends up back where its supposed to be. the problem is the carb its nothing else its the carb, fuel will not spray out of the jets and its not because i dont have the fuel line hooked up right because its been there and back and i get nothing. all i want to know is why wont fuel spray out of the jets, why wont fuel reach the top of my carb, is it some kind of adjustment that i screwed up? is something closed too much to allow fuel to get to the jets ? if its not gonna work i'll put the edelbrock on there and live with the problems.

accelerator pump
What is the accelerator pump? Would that cause the car to idle, but to accelerate you would have to pump the gas pedal constantly?
i think the accelerator pump thingy just gives it more fuel when starting or somethig but im not sure and its i think is computer controlled, but on my old q-jet not cc it didnt work and i had no problem that i noticed but once i put my edelbrock on that was a great 2 hour mod.
