350 eng. what size Carb is needed?

Ok, I have a friend that has a 350 he just put in his 83 and he was wondering if I knew what size carb he should put on. I don't know much about carbs so I told him I would ask you guys. (he dosen't have a computer). He said his specs are this: 9.5:1 comp. flat tops, stock intake, headers, 1.94/1.5 valves, cam is 212 dur. 480 lift. Appreciate any help you can give.

Anything from a 650 to a 50 would be reasonable. With that small of a cam, a 650 spreadbore like a Holley 6210 would probably be my first choice.

He needs to make sure he has a non-computerized distributor on it. It will never run right with the stock 83 dist.

Ok thanks, I will ask him about the distributor. Did you mean a 650 to a 750 carb? That is a pretty small cam huh. Should run smooth though.

Talk him into a new intake--it will help take advantage of the cam and headers and new carb. 600 holley squarebore would work fine too.

I have a pretty mild 350 too. I went to a vaccuum HEI distributor and an Edelbrock 600cfm carb with a dual plane edelbrock manifold. it worked out really well.

Id be in agreeance here. The holley 650 dubble pumper would provide adiquate feed without reducing the responsiveness of the engine, or if you could find a good carter/afb/edelbrock 650, that would work as well. A new intake is defenatly in order, it should have come before the valvetrain and block upgrades in my opinion. A good one to consider, price and performance wise would be the Edelbrock Performer RPM or Air Gap RPM. These have got to be my top choices in street performance intakes for carborated SBs.

Yeah my friend said he can't afford an intake right now but he likes the idea of a double pumper. He dosen't want to cut corners on the carb. He wants to get the carb and later put on an intake. A 650 double pumper sounds good he said. He also said he has a good distributor for it. You guys have helped a lot thanks from me and my friend. :hail:
