Sticking Idle/Throttle
Well I am HOPEING someone knows what maybe causing this. This is with a V6 2.8L engine. After the car is warmed up, the idle seems to stick around 1300RPM, however if I lightly just tap the accelerator pedal, it comes down to 800ish where it should be. I have timed it properly, and once its down at the proper idle, it's fine untill the pedal is depressed, thenit idles at 1300 again, till the accelerator is tapped again. What in the world is going on here? BTW this is a 1984 Firebird.

Check and see if the throttle is binding on something. It could be the spring is a little week.So its not able to close the throttle all the way causing you to have to tap the gas. the spring builds tension and is able to snap back, but just touching the gas it doesn't enough tension to fully close. if its not hitting anything replace the spring. here its only 3 or 4.00 dollars...
hope that helps.

The choke thermostat coil could be getting weak and not
opening far or hard enough to move the fast idle cam out of
the way of the fast idle screw. My El Camino had the same
problem until I changed the choke coil.

Sorry for the delay in replying but Norbert,
was the choke thermostat coil on the V6
2bbl carb? I can't seem to find a referance to it.
EDIT: Okay I found the referance, it's just the choke stat in the Chilton's....But anywas, followed testing procedure, and the choke thermostat and the wiring are all fine, its getting 11.9V and its opening up when warm....
Also I did check the return springs (yes there are 2 on mine) and the cable, all appears fine.
So anyone else have ideas why I have a sticking high idle with a warm engine? That is untill I tap the accellerator pedel, then it comes down to normal.

Is that carb rectangular where the air cleaner sits? If so, maybe
there is an issue with the linkage to the fast idle cam. It may
need to be adjusted with pliers. I've worked on a couple of those carbs, and wasn't impressed with the choke linkage or the fuel filter and fuel line placement/ routing. What was the engineer of that stuff thinking?
