Looking for a new carb to replace my edelbrock preformer 600 CFM with electric choke.
Ok i have the carb listed above and a preformer intake. I was looking at the holley stree avenger carb for 300-400 HP engines. even though im not at the 300 HP mark I will be by the end of the year hopefully. Would that carb go on top of the intake i have? what would be a good carb to put in my car. I want to make sure it can be tuned easily. Im running really rich now and im doing a full tuneup and changing the exhaust on the car (headers back). any help would be great.

The typical reason people go with the "Edelbrock" Performer carb is because it is easy to tune.
I don't have any hands-on experience with this carb, but if a backfire caused it to change the way it operated, then it would follow that something was damaged by that event. In a Holley, that typically is a blown power valve, but I don't know what backfiring does to an Edelbrock. Most likely, though, a disassembly and rebuild would reveal what the problem is and allow you to resolve it.

Replaceing carbs
I have the same carb. I also am thinking about replaceing it but for differant reasons, Mine dumps too much fule into the engine when I start it and if i am not careful it will flood my engine badly.
Last year I took it all apart and cleaned it all out. It is a very simple carb to work on and adjust.
The holly street avenger is suppost to adjust itself But that scares me a bit.
Also they make edelbrock rebuild kits for cheep money. I may try that first....Good Luck

They refer to their trademarked "No Trouble" adjustable choke, vacuum secondaries, and float, and call their power valve "No Trouble" because of blow-out protection. But, none of that implies self-adjusting.

Sounds like a choke, or possibly float level, adjustment issue.
The choke is ok, and has been running ok today. I think you might be right about the float. I know the adjustments for it and am going to take the carb apart and clean it out and adjust it.
I had to do that last year too. Thanks man....

I have 3 Edelbrock's on different vehicles and I also just bought a 770 street Avenger for my 383. Honestly I would never suggest any Holley to someone if the could use an Edelbrock. Edelbrock carbs are the easiest carb ever to adjust and work on, there can't be more than 10 pieces to one of those suckers. Also they come with a very detailed manual explaining in simple terms how to adjust every part of the carb. The only reason I bought another Holley was because my 383 would suck the bowls dry on the Edelbrock even with a good electric pump pushing it. I am impressed with the new Avenger, but as with any Holley I imagine in a year it will be leaking from every gasket.
