To skip over the details, your alternator is bad. When the alt does not work, the light comes on, which even though it says "Choke", it's really the "Alternator" light. The thing that connects it to the choke, is that when the alt is not working, the choke doesn't get its 12V that heats it up and makes it come off.

You need an alternator. Leave your choke alone, if it was fine yesterday, it isn't broke now. It will start working when you put in a new alternator.

what if my choke is stuck open, idles at 2100 no matter what, choke idiot light is on all the time, volt meter gauge jumps from 12-15 constantly. Is this a bad alternator? I'm wonderin b/c mine is stuck OPEN but has all the same symptoms he told in the last post

Change the alt first. RB is right on this one. When my alt belt broke in August (and a few times since, but thats another story...) the "Choke" light imediately came on.

Change the alt and I can almost guarantee that the problem will go away.
