benefits and bad things
I have a TBI 305, and am gonna be doing work on it soon. I hear from people all over this board that one intake type is better then the other and on and on and on. Well, after looking at prices for the different systems AND ease of installation, I hear that a carburator is the only way to go.
Ok so if that is the case, what is it that makes the carb so much better then the EFI systems aside from more air?
How are emmisions? we arn't bound by emmisions laws here at the moment but will that change soon? and if that wre to change soon what would be the alternative to the carb?
what side effects can it have?
I read you need a torque converter lock up switch...isn't that bad on the torque converter and the tranny?
thanks for your answers, and if there is a site that'll answer all of this, by all means point me to that!! Thanks!!!

going carb is a definate way to get more power than a stock TBI setup on any 305. But your going to lose drivability, and fuel economy. if your car is a daily driver i strongly recommend keeping the stock TBI and modding it, or changing other things first, such as heads / intake / cam / exhaust for starters if you havnt already.
now on the other hand, if you just want more power, dont care about economy or drivability, a carb is a quick way to insure the tunability of that power, as opposed to having to worry about stock TBI and the restrictions thereof. but just throwing a carb/intake onto an otherwise stock TBI 305 is not going to do much at all. the TBI is just one of the restrictive parts, not the only one. focus on somthing else before you change the one thing delivering some measure of fuel economy...
locking up the converter under WOT is very bad if you have any measure of horsepower. doing so with a stock 305 only helps though... heh... but under highway cruise its necessary to lockup the converter both to deliver fuel economy and more tranny fluid to the tranny.. (when it locks up it lubricates the planetaries or somthing... ill let somone else elaborate on that)
theres a TON of info on the boards that has been breached on this subject. you will get responses like try the search key alot asking those sorts of questions... I highly recommend a search. you can spend days or even weeks browsing that info alone on the archives... im just throwing out some of the basics ive learned from my experiences of going from stock TBI to carb... yes my car got a bit quicker but like i said, i dropped from 18 MPG to almost 15, and when i swapped the heads to AFR 195's and got a bigger cam I got nearly 12 MPG... but hey I ran 13's on my 305... then it blew up one day because of somthing really stupid i would rather not say
