Keeping stock fuel pump and using a pressure regulator for my carb?

Im going to install a carburated 360cu in sbc in my 88 Iroc, but dont feel like making a new plate for the top of the fuel tank. I was wanting to know if it was possible to just add an inline regulator to reduce pressure at the carb.

Would that work?
If so what would be a good regulator for my situation?

Any other suggestions on how to convert to a mechanical pump up front?

Thanks

You should be able to use a regulator as long as it has a return line to the tank.

So use the 2nd outlet to return the tank?

You Need A 3 Port AFPR Return Style Regulator, I no Barry Grant and Mallory both make them. I did the same conversion and just bought a electriv pump out of a 76 chevy monza and modified a plate it was very easy and worth the money i saved.

The pump conversion would be a cool one to see.

Also...Could I make a block off plate with a pickup line and use a mechanical pump up front?

Yah you cood just buy a mechanical pump and a pickup. Theres also four lines from the tank, a breather mounted beside the tank, a vent that goes to your charcoal canister and 2 main fuel lines, one line has a hose clamp and the other has a fitting. You only need to use the one with the fitting. My tank is still outa the car so i could get u some pics probly in the next week but i dont have any on hand.

I wont be running the smog equipment so the charcoal canister will be gone too.

Let me know man.
Thanks

To use it for any appreciable amount of time, you must run at least a 3 port, bypass style regulator. Numerous companies make them but the 3 port Mallory and BG are the only ones under $100.

And F-Crazy, it doesn't work like that. AN inferior pump inline with a better pump will make the better one, the red pump, work HARDER.

umm..I'd get something bigger. Especially if thats on juice...or at least get a second pump for the juice.

You can go here for more details on it's capabilties.

I wouldn't trust a Red pump alone if you are planning to spray also.Go with the Black pro series pump..I have ran this pump for the last 4 years with a 150-200 shot and have yet to have a fuel starvation issue with my car.I also run the Mallory regulator with a return line on my carb setup.

****!
I bought this one but I dont think it will work now!
I found some Mallory .pdf files on it and they have a separate regulator for return style apllications and this isnt it!

Would it still work by sending the fual back down the return line from the 3rd port?

No it won't work..you need the Mallory #4309 IIRC.That is the bypass style regulator.By using the third port on a regular regulator as a return the fuel will just bypass the carb..path of easiest resistance..and go back to the tank.

Im using two pumps too. I kept the intank one for my nitrous system and put the mallory 3port reg on it. I also ran an electric high flow hooley from the tank to my 750DP.

Heres a picture of my 4309 mallory regulator. Worked fine with my stock TPI pump. I also bought (and payed way too much for) the Accel TPI to AN fittings to hook them up to the stock rubber hose.

I used the Holley regulator that comes with their Blue pumps on both my cars and they work nicely. Now, if I could only find a use for the Blue pumps!
