Tighten them "sparkplug tight" not "gorilla tight". It doesn't take a whole bunch of torque to seal a carb to the intake.

Choke on a carb is pretty easy to hood up. If it's an electric choke you just need to hood the - (neg) terminal to a ground on the carb, engine or wherever's convenient and the + (pos) terminal to any convenient 12V+ sounce that is "hot" any time the ignition is on (but don't hook it to the coil + wire.... that's a no-no). Should be relatively easy to find something that's "hot" with the ignition on under the hood in a late model car but if you get stuck you might be interested to know that one of the wires that goes to your wiper motors will work just peachy. Get out a volt meter and try a few of them key-on vs. key-off. You'll find it pretty quick. Just tap into it wherever's convenient (a cheap clamshell connector is an easy way to do this) and you're good to go. The elctric choke doesn't draw much amperage (maybe 1 amp) so it doesn't have to be hooked up to a massive power source to draw current. Just has to be "hot" whenever the key is in the "run" position and dead when the motor is off.
