choke light

is it normal for the choke light to come on when starting the car? I am not sure if my choke is working....would a broken choke cause richness and smoke coming out the tailpipes?

The choke light should be lit before the car starts and should go out when it starts. All the choke light tells you is that the electrical choke circuit is working, it doesn't mean the choke itself working.

Yes, check your choke. If it stays on when it should not, you'll run rich (smoke, poor performance)
