adjusting a rochester
my carb seems to need an adjustment, im getting black smoke out of my tailpipes. I dont know if the stock carb is adjustable, my plugs are getting carbon fouled real fast after i change them.
What do i need to do to adjust it if i can?

Roc. adj.
First I would check to make sure the metering rods that hang off the arm over the secondarys haven't sliped off the arm. second, make sure the choke plate is wide open after warm-up. third, hook up a vacuum gauge to a full time vacuum port (base plate port or manifold port) and turn each screw in till rpm starts to drop then turn back out till highest rpm a attained (usually about 20-22 lbs. of vacuum. If this doesn't help you could have the floats out of adj. and you will have to remove the top of the carb. and bend the tab that contacts the fuel inlet valve up so it will close the valve at a lower level. You could also have a worn out inlet valve. The needle valve has a rubber tip on it that wears out after a long period of time. The black smoke is definatly a sign of over rich condition. Good luck!
