I have a 1406 Edelbrock carb. It was running slugglish because it was getting too much fuel (especially when you first pressed the gas pedal). I then changed the carb's springs & rods. This fixed my problem.
I believe the spring kit was about $16 and the rods were between $20-$30 (all from Summit). Changing these took about 10 minutes or so.
Hope this helps.

First of all, Where did you get the carb? Was it new? Or used?
If you can turn the air-fuel ratio screws all the way in (lightly) and it still runs, your floats are set too high or inlet valves are bad.
If it was new, Your parts man just ordered a 1406 for a SBC not taking into consideration the cu. in. of your engine, and correct application. Only place the engine can get fuel from is the idle circut or main jets. If you have the EST ignition system, check and make sure the Initial timing has been set properly (by the directions on the under hood sticker).
