Yeah Im Stupid so what

Okay so im drivin home... wasnt speedin to much.... i was goin 85-90... for like 5 miles while i was pullin off the fwy... i started hearing a thump when i tried to give it gas. baaarely made it uphill to my house. I couldnt see tooo well cuz it was like 1230am. so i get home let it sit for a while.... go back out and start it up... same deal... i trace the sound... its comin from the carb. take the air cleaner off... look inside the bowl... and zap!... i see a spark shoot from under the choke. every thump i heard was a spark under the choke... what the hell is this?

Sounds like you got a spark and choke problem.

Correct... any diagnosis, Dr. Nick?

Are there maybe any wires around the carb that have lots of voltage going though them (like maybe 12V or so) with broken insulation? It could be something as simple as that, but I really can't say, lol... this is a pretty bizzare problem.

I'd suggest unplugging anything with significant voltage going through it while its running (anything that the engine doesn't need to run for only a few seconds) and see if that helps.

Hi Everybody!
Ill look at that tonight... I made the mistake of gettin all dressed up to go out then looking under the hood. Anyway, i dont have much experience with carbs.. hence the thread title. All i know is theres a loud poping coming from the choke... the choke moves freely though... i dunno well see

Is it an electric or manual choke? Manual chocke has a cable that runs into the passenger compartment. Electric Choke has a 12V wire that runs to the choke. If its an electric choke, I would make sure it isn't internally shorting.

If you are actually getting shocked by choke then you somehow have voltage from after the coil in your carb. Most likely a shorted spark plug wire. In this case fix it before you drive your car. Fuel igniting at the wrong spot could be hazardous to your health.

Weird ...you think maybe its just backfiring and the "thump" you hear is detonation? I don't see how you could have some kinda electrical problem from INSIDE the carb in the throttle shaft area. What does the car run like?

runs like sh*t... well i got all dirty today... changed the coil... changed the module.... same deal... then remember that one of the lifters was sticking... so i had the car running and tried to find the bad cylinder... i unplugged each wire from the cap one at a time... found it... its kinda late right now to get further but im gonna get under the valve cover to see whats up... so its running better on 7 cylinders.... ill see what happens tomorrow morn. its making a destint popping sound from the carb but its not a prob with the carb...

Here's a wild guess - you've got a spark plug wire shorting out to the air cleaner or carb.

I was sooooooooo frickin close to gettin the bird back in the air and snap! broken bolt in the head. it turns out that the exhaust valve was sticking... why? the rocker arm nut nearly came off of the rocker arm itself... so it was just hanging there away from the pushrod... LUCKILY the pushrod didnt fall into the block. thank ***. the sound i was hearing was the exhaust building up in the cylinder since the valve was stuck and it backfired up towards the carb... still doesnt explain the spark i saw but oh well maybe thats just what a shot of extremely hot exhaust at 1am looks like

So you got it running good again I suspect? Yeah, those plastic vacuum lines are the pits. I just use a bit of vacuum line to stick them together again lol.
