best carb size?

What is the most ideal carb setup for my car? currently i run a Holley 600 cfm DP. is that enough? do i need more?

mods:
-355ci
-stock 305 heads
-Comp cam-254°/264° duration
-Edelbrock Performer intake
-Mallory GM HEI w/ street coil
-SLP Headers...possibly selling

thats the gist of it. i want to stick with the DP line. i also want the electric choke...if that matters any. i also want the vacuum secondaries.

ditch the heads and get a 750. i dont know of any dp carb with an electric choke from holley. they do have a conversion kit however you can slap on.

yea i figured that id have to do the choke swap. what are some good heads to use? if at all possible, id prefer to just go in and replace the lifters, rockers, etc.

Some things aren't lining up here. You say you have a 600 DP, want to stay with DP, but want vacuum secondaries. "DP" means "double pumper", which means mechanical secondaires. DP and VS are mutually exclusive. I don't suppose you mean dual fuel inlet, by any chance.

Anyway, I'll beg to differ with the recommendations. That's a pretty mild cam, and you will not use all of the flow capability of a 600, let alone a 750. And, if the 305 heads are the factory-stock '82 parts, then they can be improved, but if you've got dished pistons (very common amoung 350s), the heads are actually doing you a favor by raising compression. They can be improved with 1.94" intake valves and some basic porting (primarily in the valve bowl areas) and port gasket matching. Screw-in rocker studs (better reliability) and upgrade valve springs (better high-RPM capability) never hurt. Even then, though, with that cam and intake, you aren't going to overwhelm a 600 cfm carb.

Why do you want to change the lifters? I can understand upgrading rockers.

yea i read that vacuum vs mechanical thing on holley's site just after i posted it

anyway, no, i have TRW forged pistons. my CR is like 9:1 right now. i know that throwing 305 heads are an easy way to up the CR, but im thinking about swapping over to a vortec setup. and possibly switch out the cam to a more aggressive one. so yes, in the end (well by mid winter) i will have the parts to build up to a 750 cfm...i think.

Is a 750VS too much for a stock L69?

My computer took a dump. I have a 750VS Holley to put on it and a non-CC dist. Is this too much for a L69/5-speed combo? If so, could I jet it down to make it work ok? I need help ASAP because my car is barely running right now and I drive about 25 miles to work on way every day. Thanks in advance.

For that setup you don't need a 750cfm. 600cfm should work well. With a 750...youd make all your power up high. Which is not a good combo for that performer intake. A 600 should do good down low where you need it. Your intake is gonna do good from idle - 5500rpm while the stock 305 heads up to maybe 4500rpm or so. Im not sure about the cam. But throwing on a 750 isnt going to help anything...it will breath high and kill your low end hp. a 600 should help downlow and give you much better throttle response.

definately 750DP and maybe even holley's 830DP once you get the mods done.
