Choke on Quadrajet
Hey Guys,
I have a Quadrajet carburator on a 305 in my 83 firebird. I bought this car this summer, and have been making minor changes, interior, tires, shiny things on the engine
Problem is that in the summer i did not notice that my choke does not work. I asked an older friend of mine (like 50 something) if it was the choke, and indeed it was. There is like a place for a vaccum hose on the left side of the carburator, but i do not know what it hooks up to, and neither does he, we looked at it for a bit, and the only thing it could possible be (in our opinion) is a smog related round thingy (sorry for the non-accurate terms) on the intake manifold. That is all clogged up with greese, and gunk. And now in the winter, its a SOB to drive when its cold, and i have to keep it rev'd for a while before it stops dying. Is that were the vaccum hose goes ? Do i need to replace it ? or what do i need to do !? Thanks

I guess the exact nature of the question was unclear.
When you take the stock air cleaner off, there is a vacuum hose that goes with the air cleaner, leaving an open vacuum port located where it sounds like you've got one open.
There is a vacuum "pull-off" for the choke, it opens the choke slightly after then engine starts when completely cold. It doesn't have anything to do with the choke closing, however. If not there/attached, the engine will be over-choked when you first start it, but will clear as the engine starts to warm up. If it's working but not adjusted correctly, it can open the choke too much at first and make it run terrible until the engine warms up a little.
Choke mechanisms need to be clean in order to operate properly. Sounds like you were refering to the EGR valve, but it's true for both.
Hope that is of some help.

Damn, i think that that is what did it. I have an after market air cleaner, and there was a vaccum line that i pulled. Problem is i threw the old air cleaner away. What should i do now ? I can get an other vaccum hose, but what do i do with it so my choke will work again ? Joined: Mar 2000

Well, I guess my answer wasn't any clearer than your question.
The air cleaner part runs a flap on the snorkel. If you have an aftermarket air cleaner, then you just put a cap on that vacuum port.
The choke pull-off stays on the carb. There is a piece of vacuum hose about 1-1/2" long that connects it to its vacuum source. It's not completely clear in this picture borrowed from kfoley, but if you look at the carb at what's the lower right in the picture, you'll see the two vacuum lines - one longer one sticking out & capped off where the line to the air cleaner used to go, and the other short one going to the choke pull-off (can barely see it - white-ish looking thing).
It is possible for choke pull-offs to go bad. Also, if you don't have the other port capped off, you could lose the vacuum signal for the pull-off.
