Car: '89 Firebird Formula
Engine: 350 w/ carb
Transmission: A4
Carb Conversion on a Firebird
alright I just aquired a 1989 Firebird Formula and I looked udner the hood and there was a Carburetor... Its older and I havn't checked what kind havnt been able to really see any visable brand name... but I don't know hwat to think . I'm pretty new to cars... I heard it was illegal for a 89 to havea carb on it... heard my engine is garbage now... Can I get some I don't know input on this...

Are you sure it's a carb, and not throttle body injection (TBI)?

My 89 Formula also has a carb'ed engine. Of course, it isn't stock, either.

my 89 camaro has a holley on it and there shouldn't be any thing illegal about it. I have never heard of any thing like that.

Sorry, an '89 with a carb is very much illegal to be driven on the street. Breaking federal law.

i never heard of such a thing in what state is this lawat? i now this is not true in az. alot of people that i know have carbs on cars that are in the 80's and 90's

It's not a state law. It's a federal mandate.
Same with your cat, the AIR system, etc. If you were seen by someone that cared, you could face up to a $25,000 fine.
Since you live in a state or area that obviously doesn't do emissions testing, you'll probably never have to worry. But if you tried to move to Cali with your car like that, you'll never get it registered.
