open element air on stock carb'd 305?

Engine: V8 305 5.0L Edelbrock cam and lifters
Transmission: 4 speed automatic 200R4
open element air on stock carb'd 305?
can i run a open element air filter in place of my stock element....is there room...and will it just suck in hot air without a hood scoop or cowel induction??
