I was wondering if anybody new anything about this. I read in a book on how to build hp that the stock air cleaner assembly on 83-85 carburated z 28s is relatively unrestrictive and that it made the car .2 seconds faster then when using an open element 360 degree aircleaner. Does anybody know if this statement holds any truth to it. I have both kinds of aircleaners and are not sure which to use.

 

The single snorkel LG4 air cleaner is pretty restrictive, and an open element will allow it to breathe better and make more power.

The dual-snorkel L69 air cleaner is a very good piece. An open element can actually slow you down if you have one of them because of ingesting less dense air warmed up by the radiator/engine.

(Edit: Some day I'll learn to spell, and have the engine "consume" hot air instead of joking about it...)

Two problems not yet mentioned about running an open element on the street:

1) Without the snorkel and its thermovac setup, you can have an off-idle dead spot. I ran mine with the mods before I got the dual snorkel (the single snorkel just killed it), and when not completely cold but not completely warmed up, the dead spot almost turned deadly at an intersection.

2) Emissions. If you have a visual emissions inspection, the open element won't cut it.

 

Just out of curiosity, after what both the kid and RB83L69 said, why would you want to run an open element air filter?

The dual snorkel air cleaners (as well as the scoops and ducting) aren't getting any easier to find and if you want something that will feed more cool air to the carb, that is the way to go. IROCZDAVE usually has the dual snorkel air filter housing available.

 

I am only going to stick with the open element filter for the time being till I get the money to buy a duel snorkel air cleaner. Most of my money is going to my other car, which is a 71 383 cu dodge challenger and parts for that car are definately not cheap or easy to find. Thats why I like the third gens becuase info and parts are so readily available. So dont worry the open element is only temporary.

 

will that air filter fit over a demon carb? cause if it will i want to try and get one so my car appears to be stock.

 

Yes.

You may need a spacer on top of it, to keep the base from hitting the fuel level adjustment nut.

 

Contact me. I have one in WAY better shape than the one in the picture (looks almost new) and the scoops, and a new set of tubes that I may be willing to part with if anyone is interested. I even have the proper spacer!

Anyway, yea, the dual snorkel in the best. The only problem I've noticed is that when its dry and dusty outside (like a SK summer) and air filter can get pretty dirty pretty fast if you have the cold air ducts hooked up.

 

Barry - I also have ont that I want to run on a SD carb. What spacer are you using, and did everything fit under a stock hood??

No. , or barely. It broke 2 studs off of the louvers. It was a homemade spacer....the shortest possible. I wouldn't recommend it. It's too close. But my manifold and heads are different than yours.
