replacing accelerator pump on quadrajet

Has anyone here ever replaced the accelerator pump on the stock CC quadrajet? I have very little experience with carbs, and I've been told mine was bad. It takes forever and a half to get it started when its been sitting overnight. Also, who stocks accelerator pumps for this carb? Autozone doesn't carry them......thanks....

I don't know who sells just the pump, but Pep Boys sells a rebuild kit that includes a new pump. You might want to read the above thread, it has all kinds of newbie info in it.

FYI: You might need to replace the fuel pump/pressure regulator.
A weak accel pump shot can be caused by low fuel level in the float bowl, which can be caused by low fuel pressure due to a weak spring inside the pressure regulator mounted on the bottom of the fuel pump.
Do you have a fuel pressure gauge?

good info guys....

no I don't have a fuel pressure tester but I think the pump 's like $12 so I may just replace it and see what happens. When a fuel pump starts to go, is it gradual? I thought it would be more of a sudden thing. If that doesn't work I'll just rebuild the quadrajet.....

It can be gradual.

I'm not sure you're on the right track. If hard to start after sitting overnight is the symptom, I'd look for fuel bowl draining (either through the galley plugs on the bottom of the fuel bowl, or syphoning back out of the tank - cured by using a fuel filter with a check valve), or poor choke operation. Weak fuel pump could be a contributor.

If it was accelerator pump, you'd get stumbling/backfiring when giving it more gas, whether cold or warmed-up.

Wow! Thanks for that info 5-7. I was told by a mechanic that the accelerator pump was bad, but this is also the same idiot that told me to just put on a non computer dist. and carb cause they're too hard to troubleshoot.......

So I guess it's not the accelerator pump. Can I get that type of fuel filter from any parts store?

Yes, it's the "normal" call-out for the application. The check valve goes towards the fitting/nut.

If an empty fuel bowl is the issue, I doubt the filter is the problem, though. I ripped the check valve out of mine just to be sure it doesn't cause a flow restriction, and I don't have a problem starting even after sitting all week when on travel. More likely it's the galley plugs leaking.
