HELP ME OUT - need easy tuning tips for 305 LG4 carb motor
Hi All,
This is my first post in thirdgen & I hope you are ready to give me a little help....as I need it
Yesterday I purchased a 1985 5.0 Trans-am auto as my first american car. (I'm in the UK). Now its the 160bhp carb model with the LG4 motor and apart from a new stainless exhust its 100% Bog stock.
First
Please post any easy (low cost) mods to get a little more power out of the beast.....it does need more power for sure! but still cracked 120mph on the way home...just. I'm not looking for a race setup.... lets just say I'd like to make 200bhp
Second
If there are any Mags worth subscribing to relevent to my car let me know
I look forward to reading the replys
Cheers

Well, we've been a lot of help here on this side of the pond, haven't we?
Check out the tech articles on the base forum www.thirdgen.org . There's one on getting the most out of your q-jet.
About the only thing to add to what it said is it often helps to advance the base ignition timing over what the factory called out. Assuming you have a computer controlled q-jet, 6 degrees vs. the factory spec zero degrees can make a nice difference.
From your other post, you've already improved air cleaner flow. A 2nd snorkel would help even more.
After that, you're beyond tuning and into modification. Exhaust is a biggie. Then you're looking at cam change, head porting, etc., to improve beyond that.

Thanks for that,
I've played with the secondarys a little and have them just about right,
I'll have a go with the other tip, I've also removed the smog pump belt which seamed to make alot of differance.
The car has a £550 rebel powerflow exhurst system......ITS NOT VERY WELL MADE AT ALL. the bend over the Diff is all kinked the Y pipe is a T....all the bends seam to srink in DIA
So I now need a nice set of headers and I'd then like to make my own dual exhurst system...
Its all good fun
Cheers

Welcome to the boards. I got drunk a few times in Lincoln but then I can say that about most places I've been.
As for magazines forget it. Buy a shop manuel and search on here for information as needed. Cross check the responses though if your not sure because while there's a lot of good information on this site nevertheless there are some people who couldn't find their backsides with both hands.
An LG4 will respond well to a proper exhaust system as previously mentioned.
