Running rich on one side and low idle????
I started up my new (used but new in my car) motor yesturday and i had it idling at about 1000-900 but i wasnt used to that with my 305 it would idle at about 1500 non computer controled. so today i played with the 2 carb screws on each side of the carb. i have a holley avenger 660cfm and when i reved it today i heard a pop so i moved all the plug wires into the right spot and got the car to start but now i wont hold an idle above 500 rpm. i can rev it fine but i cant get the it idling above 500 it stays about the same in drive too i didnt touch the idle screw at all so i dont think thats the porblem and i dont now what the timings at?? PLus its running rich on the passenger side theres black smoke out of the exhuast and it burns my eyes. Do the 2 screws-- one controls fuel one controls air or one controls left side the other controls right?
I tryed playing with them and cant get any results.

"I heard a pop" that's not good.
Pops are not good... A pop (backfire) can damage the power valve in a holley carb making it idle real rich.
May need to replace the power valve.

oh yea it was a POP in the exhaust if it makes any difference.
Also my carb has the power valve blow-out protection.

Ok i got it back to running good i turned the screws all the way closed th e backed them out 1 and 1/2 turns and it started right up this morning but it has like no power this motor should be at very least be putting out 300hp and it feels like my pos 305
so what do i need to adjust? I think its running a little bit rough i had black soot crap on the plugs from before so im changing them out tommorw and see what happens but the carb definitly needs tuning. So where do i start???
