Time for a new carb :(

Well I just finished installing my new engine. On my 82 T/A
But the carb is trash. The car runs like it did before the new engine. But without all the black smoke from the bad rings.

It has not even half the power at a light my 1988 sunbird has. and there is a delay in responce.
There also seems to be no difference between half throttle and flooring it. Its seriously week

It also has fluctuating idle. Im constantly adjusting it.

The previous owner obviosly got it from a salvage yard it has the yellow paint on it..lol

Anyone know of a good place to get it rebuilt? Or where to get a good used one?

Thanks

I just looked at my vac lines..

I have the EGR valve going directly to the carb.. The EGR Solenoid is by passed. Would this cause my problems?

Also there is no vac line going from the EFE TVS to the EFE. But thats only needed for cold weather right?

All of my other lines are connected correctly.

Yes, EGR hooked directly to the carb vacuum would be a problem.

I've been running w/o EFE for 2-1/2 years, including winters. No particular problem.

Ok i was able to find the correct lines and the EGR is hooked up correctly now. It does have more power.. But still not what it should have.. I cant seem to get above 2,500 RPM

Any Ideas? Is there something else that would make it run this way?

How much of the ignition did you freshen up when you put in this new engine?

FWIW, black smoke is unburnt fuel, not burning oil (bad rings). You may very well have transferred your original problem from one (good) engine to another.

I know the old engine was going out.. I allways had oil coverd plugs. It has the old cap and rotor. The plug wires were only a year old and the car mostly sat around so there still ok. The coil tested good last time i checked. I have the timing at 8* is that correct? The cap/Rotor are rather old Could that cause this? of course it has fresh plugs. Any other parts of the ignition system im forgeting?

Edit: Oh also the smoke was actually grey I should have said that in the first place

Thanks

you CAN get a cc q-jet from Jet, my buddy just got his from them for his 355 build up which is the stage2 750cfm but if you call them, be sure to be specific as they do have non-cc ones also

yeah a bad cap and rotor can cause the car to run crappy and i would have changed them if i was putting in a new engine cmon thats what 20 bucks kinda silly not to replace something as simple as that ...thats like taking the oil from the old engine and reusing it in the new one ...lol..

I know it can make it run bad.. just wondering if it would prevent it from hitting higher Rpms

I did reuse the old oil... Doesn't its age a wisdom help break in the rings? j/k

yeah i think the oil would already be trained to run well with the engine and be okay ..LMAO...id also scrape off the old gaskets and reuse those ....LMAO.....sorry

A couple of other things...

Is your carb a cc carb? If so, I believe timing should be set at 0*, not 8*.

Make sure your kickdown(throttle valve) cable is set correctly- too much slack keeps the RPMs down.

If you bought the carb off of a junkyard, it is possible that the idle mixture screws have been tampered with. See if they have been accessed.

to adjust your tv cable there is a D shaped piece right before it conects into the bracket that it is attached to on the intake ...you press that D shaped button in and pull the black sheathing on the cable behind the D shaped button backwards twards the firewall as far as it will go ...then you get in your car and press the gas pedal down slowly and you should hear a click click click noise as you press the pedal down that is the cable popping into the correct position when youve reached wot you get out and come up to the carb grab the throttle and check to make sure you have wot completely then you should be just fine
