Is a Q-jet on 82 firebird computer controled?
I have an 82 firebird with the q-jet. It stalls with quick accel. from stop. Now wont start...seems flooding and when it does start it dies again. Im thinking its either the accelerator pump or the fuel pump. Anyone have any ideas. This car is my everyday driver and i cant get anywhere. Help!

Ive called several shops and they all tell me either 1 of 2 things. The fuel pump or the carb. So i dont know. I just have to get it fixed. I dont want to be suckered into something.

A carburetor rebuild probably is not a bad idea, especially for an older ride. The kit costs about $20 and you can be done in a few hours. I've done the CC Q-jet myself and you'll need a dwell meter to set the idle air valve and there's a few other adjustments to make, but all this needs to be done with a regular tune-up anyway. You can check your fuel pump flow and pressure but the engine needs to be idling to do this. Get a haynes or chilton manual (some libraries have them) and it will walk you through most of the carb adjustments and fuel pump flow and pressure tests.

$200-$300 to rebuild, install, and adjust a carb is a pretty good price.
Only thing I'd be concerned about is it being too low (either aren't doing enough, or don't know what they're doing).
You could have float, needle/seat, choke, mixture control solenoid, who-knows-what-else problems causing these issues - or one wire not connected.
I always recommend a tune-up of the ignition before starting to address carb issues. That may be what the shop ends up doing (along with reconnecting that wire...).

I had my friend come over and look at it and i noticed the float and the jets look all off. We're just getting it redone by a friend now for $250. Completely cleaned and fixed. Now, i just need to put the edelbrock performer intake.

Don't be afraid to try to fix this yourself. A search here will provide a lot of help on diagnosing carburetor problems and the adjustments you have to make. The computer controlled mixture solenoid is pretty simple and can be checked easily with a simple dwell meter. $250 to get a carburetor rebuilt when you can do it yourself-the cost difference is more than the cost of that performer air-gap and carb adapter.

Sorry meant performer rpm air gap. Square-bore to spread-bore. Unless I'm out of date with my edelbrock catalog.
