quadrajet question
for the life of me i cant seam to find what setup equipment came with the origenal quadrajet. Im trying to elimanate what could be casing my car to blow black smoke when you give it gas.
it looks like the main Metering Rods are up way too high, I have
43k main Metering Rods .72 jets and CH Secondary.
or at least a set up that works well for a stock 305
Thanks

I am not exactly sure what the stock rods and jets were. I will say that the jets and rods you have are way too rich for a 305.
I'm running .73 jets and 48 rods in my 355 running 13.9's.
You don't say how it idles. Does it load-up and stall out idling for a while? If it does I would drop the jets 2 sizes.
If it idles fine then start by swapping in larger primary metering rods. I would suggest jumping right up to 48 rods.
As for the secondary rods I wouldn't worry about them.
Its very hard to diagnose over the PC. If I am way off someone will chime in.

it seams to idle fine just when i give it gas it loads up, but what your saying makes sence the carb was rebuilt many time's over not by me. I suspected that they were wrong. the car is running way to rich I mean black smoke too rich lol
thanks for the help, now to talk to chev dealer if they have the specs on the carb or use edelbrock setting Main Jet: .073; Metering Rods: Primary-50M, Secondary-DR.
