Double Pumper or Carter AFB?

Double Pumper or Carter AFB?

OK, I have to rebuild a carb. I have to choose either a Holley Double Pumper which supposedly needs an acceleration pump. When you floor it, the car immediately dies from what I hear. Or a Carter 625cfm AFB Competition Series carb, its basically a POs needs a good rebuild. So, which one would be easier and cheaper to rebuild? I have NEVER rebuilt or even really dug into a carb so Id be walking into this a total N00b. anyways, any help is greatly appreciated.

BTW, the Double Pumper is like a 675 or somewhere in that vincinity, not sure.

Assuming from your previous post this is going on the '82:

The size of the Holley is important. In double pumpers, they made 600, 650, 700, 750, etc., but not 675.

Unless you have higher stall than stock, you can overwhelm a 305 with too big of a double pumper. Assuming 1500 stall speed (which may be too generous of an assumption), a 305 can barely handle a 650 DP. Put another way, with a 650 DPon a 305, the engine will have to be above 1500 before you floor it. See http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/TechSer...fo/TI-225.html for details.

The Holley would be much easier to rebuild, though. Pretty straight forward as long as the hard pieces are in good shape.

I would suggest the Holley because the parts are easy to find. Any carb rebuild is relitively inexpense. Your looking at about $20-25 for the rebuild kit and $10 for carb cleaner. Depending on the setup you have now, you would have to T-off the fuel line going to your carb to feed fuel to both fuel bowls of the Holley. By the way, what setup are you running right now?

I am preparing for my first Holley rebuild, and from the diagrams I bet it is a little easier than the Carter. But man, Carter's are a breeze to do as well. I rebuilt one for the first time in my dorm parking lot in an hour (taking my time) with a can of carb cleaner. All you need for the Carter is to look on edelbrock.com and find the Edelbrock Performer Carb owner's manual and in there is an exploded view, well that and a rebuild kit. Just carefully lay out your parts (watch that accelerator pump check ball and spring) and put it back together in reverse and remember not to get too crazy torquing things down. In that manual it will also show how to set the float level. Actually, all of this info would probably be in the rebuild kit anyway. Rebuilding carbs is not hard and best of all, you can take it indoors and work on it instead of messing up your back under the hood. Again as to which one to do, five7kid is right on about double pumpers need to be sized right. If it is too much carb you will probably be happier with the Carter (as long as it isn't screwed up beyond what a rebuild can fix, which is unlikely). Enough rambling from me, someone else chime in here and toss your $.02

Well, I attempted the double Pumper instalation on the 305...WAYYYYYY too much carb...ran the numbers and hung my head in shame....its a 750 Double Pumper......so bye bye on that carb lol. Anyways I figure Ill rebuild the Carter and give it a get go. thanks again.

Get a 600 or 650 double pumper. If you get it set up right, you won't regret it.
