Not sure If this is normal

Kay, on my carburetor, (2 barrel) one barrel flap thing (sorry for terminology) is always open! i turned off my car and it was still open! It is te smaller of the flap things.....is this my choke plate? If so does that mean it is stuck? cause i do get crappy fuel milage. And how can i tell if my carb is electronic or not? pics of the difference in the two would be great Thanx guys

Now that you mention it, I've never heard if the Canadian V6's were computer controlled or not.

Sounds like you choke is open, but it should be when the engine is warm. You need to check it when the engine is stone cold, hasn't been started, and the throttle had been opened slightly. Being stuck open would make it hard to start, not give you poor fuel mileage.

They're not computer controlled. I had an 84 2.8l and the choke linkage stuck one day and it got terrible mileage, but yours sounds stuck open. Is it idling to high?

Does it idle kinda rough and 'touchy' untill its got some heat in it? Before I got my Qjet's choke to work when it had problems, it was always stuck open. It always did start, but would take awhile, and it was very touchy untill the engine had a little heat in it.

YES thats exactly what is wrong, it will stumble until there is some heat in the engine, today in the morning i started it (took 10 seconds, a record) and then it stalled half way up the road. Then it started up again and the idle stayed actually prettylow......so i dunno if this is the problem.....thanx again

Easiest way would probably be a manual choke, the best way would be an electric choke. Really, they are just as easy as a manual choke to install too.

I'm not sure what the carb on a V6 is like, but on my Holley (I dont remember the Qjet well) there are two things you do. I think its basically the same for most carbs.

There is a screw behind the electric choke setup, near the bottom of the carb. This is the high idle screw. It looks something like the idle speed adjustment screw, complete with the spring over the threads, but its smaller. You adjust this so that when the engine is started cold, it will idle high untill its got some heat in it, usually around 1200-1500 rpm.

There is also the choke adjustment itself. On my Holley, and my Qjet, it was a big round black thing on the pass side of the carb with one wire going into it. This adjusts the choke plate itself. You have to loosen it up (usually 3 screws, but some have rivets) enough that you can turn it. On the Holley, you turn it counter-clockwise to richen it up, meaning the plate closes more and for longer, and clockwise to lean it out, meaning the plate doesnt close as much, and opens up quicker. I can't remember if my Qjet was the same, but it probably was.
