Some quick questions for some Holley guys.
I've been told by a few people that a Holley 600 would be the best choice for my 87 Trans Am with an LG4. So, my first question would be how much power should this give to me over the stock carb on a totally bone stock LG4? And where could I get one cheap online? The main site here has an article that says that I can find one for $20-$40 used and I've love to get a deal like that because I am broke, I love my car to death, it needs a carb anyway, and it's a better deal than the $300 or so they sell for new.

You probably won't see any real performance gain from changing to a Holley. However, I like my Holley much more than the Qjet I had simply because its so much easier to work with.

The carb isn't the only thing that will need to be changed. You have to change the distributor, too, because yours is computer controlled like your carb, and the Holley or whatever aftermarket is not. If you have an automatic transmission, you will also have to rig up some means of locking up the torque converter clutch.
As is all to common, people think putting a different carb on will automatically increase HP. This part - "totally bone stock LG4" - makes that untrue.
Go to the FAQ forum and read what I posted there about getting more power out of an LG4.

My line of reasoning about the carburetor was how it was functioning. For the longest time, the car was backfiring a lot, so I got to tinkering with the timing trying to make something work, but whenever it did work, it only did so for a few days and then it would start backfiring again. (I had a hard time keeping the car running once I started it too - it would start and then rev down and shut off unless I kept giving it gas until it warmed up.) Well anyway, it started "missing" a lot too - I would be giving it some gas and it wouldn't respond, it was like my foot wasn't even on the pedal. So I figured it needed a tune-up, so I tried doing that, and I couldn't because the stupid plugs are so hard to get to. I brought it to a mechanic and had him deal with that for me, and once it was done it kept "missing" still. He says the carburetor is shot, and whenever I start it up (it's not on the road right now) it gives me trouble when I rev it. Once again, like I'm not even giving it gas at all. If you can't tell I've had a good deal of problems with the car since I bought it, and this is less than half of what I've had to deal with. Maybe I can talk about the constant overheating in another post.
If you can't tell, I really don't have much of a clue, but I really love muscle cars, especially Trans Ams. 3rd gens really appeal to me visually plus mine was really easy to get and it was cheap. ($500) This is my first car that I've bothered to invest any time or effort into. This seems like a good time to mention that I think it's awesome that this site exists. None of my generation appreciates these type of cars; they're all about getting mommy and daddy to buy them some Honda so they can put ridiculous body kits and fart cannons on them. Kudos to you for writing that FAQ about LG4's too.
I was going to hopefully get an upgraded exhaust system ($$$ permitting) and do the dual-snorkel mod (I've been reading around this site a lot since I got my car and I've seen this mentioned as a relatively simple modification.) So as you can tell, I am interested in a few light modifications here and there. This car is going to be my daily driver once the winter is over and I'm pretty broke, so I don't want to get too extreme. Plus, like I said, I am a novice when it comes to this.
So, long story short, if I am only doing a minor mod here and there, as a person with not much money, would I be better off just getting the stock carburetor rebuilt or what?
