Is this okay
i have just brought a '83 Z28 camaro with a L48 engine transplant. Its got the 700 R4 auto box. My question is about the carb set up. The car has currently got a 0-1850 4 barrel Holley carb but in the manual it states that this carb is not designed for any automatic overdrive trnsmissions. Its also states that severe damage will occur if fitted. Is this info correct? should i remove the carb? if so then what carb will work well with the L48 engine.

IIRC, that has something to do with the kickdown cable hookup (or lack of). I don't know if theres any way to make it work though, I'm not too familiar with autos.

IIRC = if I remember correctly
A qjet would work
Check with holley, there should be a part available to add on a kickdown cable

uh oh, you're a few steps back there eh?
The q-jet was the factory carb on that car, which would have worked with the factory transmission just fine... (The 700R4 wasn't factory that year was it? ) Well, it'd probably still work..
That would be an easy swap, but it kinda depends if you intake manifold would accept a spreadbore carb.
However, first step would be to try and use that carb, I don't know anything about holley, maybe someone else here can help you, but perhaps you can purchase the correct bracketing for it?
Might be easiest.

thx sonix for your help. I think your right why fork out for a new carb if i can use the one i've got right. from what i have been told the main thing is the TV hook up. I think this one worrants a trip to a transmission specialist.

I suppose... It's more of a carb then trans thing though, kinda an inbetween problem. Well good luck, it's weird no one else has posted about this, i'm shocked that no one else can give better advice than I could about this

I used to have an 1850 on my car- transmission worked just fine. I just welded on a little ball to hook the kickdown(TV) cable to the throttle. It is very important to get the TV cable set right. I you don't feel comfortable, take it to a tranny shop and have them set it. That is, if you decide to go with the Holley.

whoever put that carb on the car may have made a TV cable bracket for it. Look at it and see if there's a TV cable attatched to the throttle lever on the carb. Chances are that if there is no cable at all then the trans would have blown up all ready or at least be slipping it's a$$ off.

up until a few days ago the car had been sitting for 18 months. i have changed all service parts and it is due to go in for its M.O.T, UK's vehicle test, next week. One thing i have noticed is that there is a tranny leak every three or four days ther is a pool of transmission fluid about 1" square, the fluid itself is very clean,. Could this be contributed by the carb not being set up

Sounds like maybe a leaky transmission pan gasket. I doubt that your carb setup has anything to do with it.

if that makes your heart stop glad yer not in my shoes. But make sure the kickdown cable is set right, lost a trans because of that. Then it will make your heart and your car stop.
