Does your accelerator pump work?

Sounds like a lean bog... try changing your fuel filter maybe? It could be all plugged up. On a Qjet, you just have to pull out the fuel line fitting in the front of the carb, and slide out the filter... its a 2min job.

look at your plugs for one thing

if the plug looks melted that isn't a good sign or do you have wet plugs. just take a look at them and tell us what they look like that can give a big clue as to what the motor is doing

do you get pinging that could be either running lean or timing

the hesitation when you first step on the gas can be as someone else said lean from the fuel filter going south or your accel pump not working.
take the air filter off and look down the throat of the carb and move the throttle fairly quick you should hear and see a quick burst of fuel going through the primary barrels.

do you have any vacuum leaks? that can cause a little stumble and hesitation. if you have a friend with vac gauge hook it up. quick and easy to do.

also try spraying some carb cleaner around the carb when the thing is running
if you spray around it (not through the top) and the idle changes chances are you have a air leak somewhere. a few good places to check there are around the base. in between each plat of the carb, and spray the throttle shafts as those sometimes wear and let air in there.

prolly more stuff then what I you need I will be honest but at least this gives you some things to check incase the typical fixes don't work

I'm assuming though the stumble is prolly accel pump related or filter

as far as the dieseling after the car is turned off. timing is one, running lean is a big one again check that filter as it heats up the combustion chamber which you can see by looking at the plugs.
how hot does the car run and when was the last time you changed the coolant? if the coolant is old or low it can lead to hot spots that will allow the car to run after you shut it off.
another last thing I can think of again points to spark plugs and that is heat range but that shouldn't be an issue unless you are doing some weird driving

wish you luck and let us know how things turn out

"...my car is an 87 and computer controled..."

Let's start from there.

That is a computer controlled quadrajet. From the description, sounds like you have a classic case of "quadra-bog". Go the www.thirdgen.org, tech articles link, and look for the article on getting the most out of your computer controlled q-jet (I'm not going to go get the URL for you - you can find it). One thing that is not mentioned in that article is that the choke pull-off plays a part in controlling the secondary air valve opening - make sure your choke pull-off is healthy.

As for timing, there is a wire to the distributor that you have to disconnect before setting the "base" timing. I believe an '87 is different from '86-earlier, which had a flat 4-wire connector - maybe someone else can chime in about the specifics of the ECM wire. LG4's typically like a little more base timing than the factory gave them, such as 6 degrees instead of the factory zero.

You may benefit from changing the secondary rods & hanger. That's discussed a lot, with DR rods being the typical favorites (worked well on mine when it was stock, and works well now that it isn't).

A couple of good sources of information on these carbs are the Haynes shop manual and HP Books by Doug Roe, both called "Rochester Carburetors".
