Throttle Return Spring - Edelbrock 600 CFM carb
Hey guys, I'm at work right now, so I don't have the carb with me to give you specifics, but I can tell you this.
The throttle return spring is not living up to its name. The spring is so weak that you can move it to WOT, and only the secondary springs pull it back enough to close the secondaries, then it sticks. Anyway, my big question is, is that spring an edelbrock specific part? O'reilly's says they can give me a generic part return spring, but should I spring for it (pun intended) or should I just keep huntin? There seems to be no carb specific repair shops that I could get the spring from here in Omaha anymore, so it's either an autoparts store or direct order, and I really was hopin to get her rollin by tonight.

Those carbs don't usually do that unless the throttle plates and/or shafts are binding up. I always see guys with this problem putting a massive generic return spring right on the throttle hook up and the left front intake bolt.
I bet you have a slight wear issue with your carb. Maybe you need to re-bush the shafts or something. Fairly common problem if that's it.
Good luck!

it felt as though the shaft was binding a bit, but having not payed attention to the play in it prior to it breaking, I didn't know if that was normal or not. I'll tear it down tonight, see what I can find. Wish I could find a book on Edelbrock carbs, they're all over for Holley's heh.

If I do have to re-bush the shaft, are those bushings readily available? or is that something else I'd have to order?

Edelbrock carbs don't have throttle return springs built in. You have to attach your own to the throttle arm.

Yep, that's what I found out today LOL - 2 bucks at O'reillys, although it was on my way to work so no carb lovin til tonight.
One thing I do have a question about though - When I disconnected the throttle springs on the right side (for primary and secondary) and pulled the bars out, there were NO bushings in there whatsoever. It looks like the previous owner (whom I would have plenty of comments if I ever ran into him, first one being buy a damn torque wrench, elbow click on cylinder heads is BAAAAAD) had put JB weld or some other kinda crap all over the right side of the secondary bar, probably to try to keep it from leaking. Are edelbrock carbs supposed to have bushings in with those rods? I would not be surprised to find that the previous owner "deleted them" (aka threw them away cuz he didn't know what they were for) when he was exploring the engine.

i had a edelbrock 600 "WOT cruise control system".. i was using the stock return springs... which worked fine until i souped up my motor and the suction at 4,500 rpms was stronger than my springs and just held the throttle stuck open.
to fix it i hooked up my return spring between my upper radiator hose clamp and the top hole of the throttle lever, because it stretches the spring out a little farther and gives it more leverage to work with, and voila! no more sticking. i'm cheap, but it worked. it also made my gas pedal stiffer, almost like a fourth gen gas pedal.

on my edelbrock 600 (or 650 not sure), i have my return spring to a bracket that is on the front intake bolt. It's a little chrome doodie. Got it at The Zone for like 5 bux in the help wanted section. check it out.
