Complications of carb...

Well i'm thinking that sooner then later i will be converting from FI to carb.

simply becuase having a FI system with sensors and crap that always go bad is gettign to be useless.

However i have almost no experience with carbs.

How hard would it be for me to Tune my newly aquired Carter 600cfm Carb? Model number 9605.

I got a deal, a Vacuum advance HEI, Edelbrock Performer Manifold, and Carter Competition Carb for $100. Carb worked when pulled but has been sitting for like 8 months.

How hard is a rebuild?

And after a rebuild how hard is it for a novice carb guy to tune it?

Any extra tools required to tune a carb?

Best bet is to buy a book on that series/model of carb and learn the basic principles of it and how it works.

Do a search on here as well for that carb. You will more than likely find a ton of peoples experiences to help you learn it as well.

And don't be afraid to ask for help.Always search for it first or you may get lashed at around here..lol.

That carb requires no special tools, other than a tach and vacuum gauge.

For tuning information check out the Edelbrock Performer series manual (the Performer is virtually identical to the Carter AFB), http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/eps_intro.html

You might also want to pick up a copy of "Carter Carburetors" by Dave Emanuel.

thanks for the manual.

it seems easy enough to tune a carb. I seriously think i can handle it.

My only question is, how do i know if i am running rich or lean?

do i need an a/f ratio meter?

Because it talks about having a different a/f ratio for each throttle position.

an A/F gauge might be nice but remember they didn't always have things like that.
good ear helps
and if nothing else take the car for a drive.

sometimes when playing with the throttle you can tell when it hits a lean spot or a rich spot

on the carb on my car I have an issue where the idle circuit is a tad too lean right now. under light load and idle it would miss a little bit and when transitioning off the idle circuit to the main circuit it would give me some nice jump if I wasn't easy on it.
or if you slam the gas and the car bogs for a second then kicks in if I remembe rright that is a good indication of running lean as well.

rich can be found out by reading your plugs.
drive the car under a specific load for a mile or two then while the car is still moving just kill the car by turning the key off and pull off to the side of the road pull the plugs and take a look.
white ash like stuff usually is lean while a dark black could be rich or oil.
