crossfire-fuel injection to carb... to the pros i need help!!

this is to all the guys who know their sh*t!
i have an 83 recaro trans am, 305 cross-fire fuel injection and i want to swap it to a carb... what all does it take to make this swap happen? what gains would i see out of the swap! trust me guys the cfi sucks it has
2 255cfm one barrel throttle bodies for those who dont know much about it. also what kind of gain could i suspect from switching the rearend gears to 3.73 from 3.23's? would the everyday drivability change much? thanxs guys most of u are always a great help!

Plenty! Just use any old intake before 86 or after market intake so it will bolt up.I too had a 83 trans with Cease Fire. Switch over with a qua. and ran alot quicker. Those computers are known to go crazy. This was my reason.

Just changing over to a carb should gain between 10-20 hp.With what you want,it would be better to put on a 350.The 305 will not go as fast without going deep into the pockets.I never took it to the track because it was a project car and my son came along. So I sold it after I found A good running Formal with a 305 TBI.

You'll gain a few hp but loose torque is that what you want? If you havent checked out the crossfire forum, stop by.

Large gains are easily obtainible with the crossfire. Im at 190rwhp with just a few mods

And I'm running 13.9's in SALT LAKE CITY! Why don't you acctually come to the track and see what your car can do. Then if you don't like the results, swap to the carb, and post the bench marked change.

I'm quite certain that I could show you a bunch of mods you could do to that intake that would cost you nothing but time, and net you more power than swapping to a carb, which will certainly cost you some $$. Why didn't you meet me at the track a couple weeks ago?

BTW the CFM rating on the TBI's is plenty for your little/stock 305. The TB's ARE NOT your hp limiting factor.

Wow.

I guess that was a real conversation killer.

I’ve got an 83 305 CFI z28. Speedometer goes to 85mph. I want more power. What can I do to
get that? Would I have to change to speedometer?

Re: crossfire-fuel injection to carb... to the pros i need help!!

To switch from tbi to carb:

option 1: rip the computer out, swap the intake to a carb intake, replace the distributor with a vacuum advance distributor.

option 2: keep the computer. find an 82-87 carbureted thirdgen and scavenge the intake, carb, and associated hardware.

Switching from 3.73's to 3.23's will give you better gas mileage, but not better performance at the strip.

to 83z28crossfire: The speedometer has nothing to do with how much power your car has or how fast it will go.
The options are endless to improve performance. Swap out the exhaust, change the gearing to a more aggressive set, do an engine swap. . . .

thanks. At any point when improving performance. Will I need to change the dash cluster? I’m not sure what gearing I have now. What would you recommend for a engine swap?

Personally, I'd work with the CFI. Cooler than a carb. Once you get it dialed in, CFI is dead nuts reliable.

Nevermind, I just realized this is a 17 year old thread........
