return line?

This actually happened last year before I put my car in storage, but I'm returning from South Korea next month and am anxious to resume work..... I bought an '82 Camaro Z28 that has a 350 with a Holley 750 Double Pumper and a mechanical fuel pump. This is work the previous owner has done. I went to the gas station to fill the tank, and only after filling it all the way up did I hear the waterfall underneath the car. It spewed fuel all over the fuel island at the local 7-11! It turns out there is another fuel line on the driver's side of the engine behind the header that was plugged, but I guess when I filled the tank, whatever was used to plug it finally gave way. It's a rubber line on the end of a metal line, so I put a larger bolt in it with a hose clamp. Now I want to do something more permanent to it, so I don't have another ground emergency. I know the motor in my car isn't stock, so this is probably what's left of a fuel return line, right? Since I have a mechanical pump, can I still use a return style regulator, so I can use the line? Thanks for any help.

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org. And thank you for your service. 2 months seems like a long time, doesn't it?

It could be either the return line or the vent line that goes to the vapor canister. Hard to say without knowing exactly where it was.

You can use a return style pump and use the return line, if that's what it is. Either a stock replacement mechanical pump, or Carter M6626 will have the return port. I ran an AC replacement pump from Checker on my hopped-up 305 for almost 4 years, running the Carter currently. Never had a problem with either.

I've actually been in Korea since February of 2005, so yes, it's been awhile, lol. Even if this was the line for the canister, could it be used as a return line? OR If it is the line for the canister, is it supposed to be vented? Is it not good to plug it? I can't remember much else about it since it's been a while since I've seen it. Thanks for the help though.

The return line goes to the bottom of the tank. The canister line goes to the top of the tank. For whatever difference that makes.

Personally, I'd rather use the return line for the return, and keep the canister in place for the vent function.
