The CFM is "what's needed". The primaries are small and can feed anything from a V6 to a 454. The secondaries are huge but flow is regulated by a spring-loaded air valve that only opens as much as the engine needs. Max is typically 750-800 CFM (larger are available but certainly not needed on a 305).

Go to EBAY and search for quadrajet. There's a guy that sells them for vehicle and marine applications. Their totally gone through with a bunch of inprovements made. For instance, on the bottom of the QJET there are some screw holes that leak fuel into the manifold, the fix is to epoxy the screws. He's done things like that. Mine arrived and the carb looked like it was factory from GM!!! He has all types, CCC, electric choke vacuum choke etc. I bought my CCC 700 cfm (Computer Controlled Carburator) for $325. I literally bolted it to the manifold, hooked up the fuel line and throttle and started driving. Idle, mixture, everything set and ready.

or you can go to the JY and pick one up for $30, maybe rebuild it with a kit for $40, and be in $70 and have an ugly yet functional carb.
why isn't there a carb on the engine now? you buying one without the induction?

Hi,
I just bought a new carb for my 84, 305 at Autozone. They had it on sale 2 weeks ago for $229.00. I was an easy replacement with minor adjustments once installed. Plus I gained about 30 extra horsepower from before
