Fuel Pump Overheating.

I have a holley red on my car. It will run for about 10-15 mins b4 the pump overheats and shuts off. Do i need to get a return style regulator so i can cycle more fuel through it to keep the temp down, or is there another way?

I have always for some reason seemed to have problems with the Holley blue/red pumps, but yet others have run them for years. That may help to do a return line but if it were me I would save up and get an AEROMOTIVE unit, its the best thing I have done for my fuel system. Are you sure you have the right gauge wire run to the unit and it is grounded properly? One of the biggest killers for electric motors is heat and thats what they generate when the motor is not getting enough current. The next time it starts slowing down put a meter on it and see what the amp draw and voltage drop is. If you pulling power from a pretty long distance for the pump you may have enough voltage drop to cause a problem, so you may have a simple fix and just up the wire size to like maybe a #10 ga.

Well i use the same size wire that was coming from the pump, its like 14 guage or something. Would it be ok to run 10 guage from the switch to the pump and then the little 2 inches of 14 guage that goes into the pump.

Did you check to see if you had a voltage drop? Anyway it never hurts to oversize the wire. Also it would be a good idea to put an inline fuse for the correct amperage that the pump calls for. When you do the wire upgrade and you butt splice to the pump wire your connector will be to big, so just take and strip the pump wire about twice as long, and fold it into to make it bigger so the butt splice will make a good crimp on the wire, I think the wire on the pump is 16/14 also. Remember if its any distance you get a voltage drop, so and upsize on the wire will actually help with the voltage drop.

Not a problem, let me know how it works out. I will check back later.

Upgrading the wire as posted will help the pump run better, but you should also run a return style regulator. I ran a blue pump on another car, and could hear the difference in how much better the pump ran after upgrading to a return style regulator, especially after a long trip (30 min or longer).

Are you running 12V through a switch directly to the pump, or using a relay? If you're not using a relay I'd definitely add one.

I would strongly recommend running a 30A relay in the circuit. You can get one and a connector for it at any decent parts store. I would wire it so the switched part of the relay is hot key on, and run your in-car switch to ground (to turn it on and off). No need for any fires!! You should still use your inline fuse for the main power feed going to the relay.

I think it is my exaust heating my pump up. I have open headers for now and i got under the car to feel the pump and on my way back out from under it i hit my arm on the panhard bar and it was hot as hell.

Maybe you should at least put some short turn downs on it.

Why don't you put the exhaust on now and then start another thread about having the same problem with your fuel pump?

I will put exaust on when i have the money. Why dont you think the pump will work then. I have done everything everyone has said and it is still heating up.

So you've re-wired it with heavier gauge wire (both hot and ground) and hooked up a return style regulator and a return line?

I rewired it with 10g wire and emailed holley and they said the pump should circulate enough fuel through it when the motor is idleing so i dont need a return style regulator. I am going to put one on it anyway when i put it back on.

If the pump is in the back open headers shouldnt affect the pump that far back. Check the grounds on your battery to. You should have a main one grounded out on the engine block and anther 10 guage or so wire grounded to the body, and a strap from the engine to the body. Also the relay idea is the best, I run a self wired relay on my pump and have no problems. Check to see the recommended amp fuse for the circuit, I used to run a hard wire switch with a fuse (no relay) and my switch got so hot it melted the plastic panel it was in

Good luck!!
