Does this fuel regulator look correct for a 350

I have a 1983 Trans Am that was Crossfire and now has in place a Chevy 350 with a Edelbrock carburetor and I'm trying to understand what I have.

I'm reading that a Mallory 4309 fuel regulator with return line is the way to go. I have this strange little thing with a ****. (see photo links) and it has no return line off it.

So
1. Replace with Mallory 4309 but where do I find the return line.
2. Not sure if they used the the pump in the gas tank? Where do I look I don't see any pump in the engine bay.

No, doesn't look like the right thing. No return line, no pump in engine compartment.

Look on the body pan in front of the rear axle on the driver's side. There should be a filter in the 3/8" line there, and a couple of other lines. One of the lines goes to the vapor canister, the other is the 5/16" return line.

If you see an in-line pump there instead of or as well as the in-line filter, then you may have an okay regulator. Depends upon what the pump is.

(I'm afraid to ask what the bungie cord does. . .)

Hi,

The vapor canister has been removed and the return line has a rubber hose with a plug in it.

How should I set it up?

Thanks,
Jim

The vapor canister isn't involved with the regulator, but if it has been removed, then the line to the tank needs to be plugged and the tank filler cap (okay, gas cap) needs to be replaced with a vented style.

To use a return style regulator, unplug the return line and attach the regulator return port to it.

Cool that helps. Now what is the best way to route the return hose? The feed line is on the left on the engine and the return is on the far right. That will be a long hose and I don't want to get it in the way.

I routed it on the front of the crossmember, using hardline for the bulk of it and rubber to make the connections.

Got it, can I buy hard line at Pepboys or do I need to make a run to Home Depot? What time of tube is compatible?

And with the Mallory 4309 what psi do I set it too? It comes with different springs?

Thanks for your help.

I used aluminum fuel line I got from Summit. You can use steel if you like. Aluminum is a lot easier to form and bend without kinking.

Normal carb pressure setting is 4-6 psi.

I went to Pepboys and they carry hard fuel lines. But I wasn't sure of the correct size?

I think I'll be good after this.

3/8" for supply, 5/16" for return.

I went to an auto parts store and they said I can use 5/16 hard brake line so I bought a 6 foot piece of that. And want to double check the location of the return line. It’s on the drives side and it’s about even with the fire wall coming out around the steering area. I want to make sure I’m not pumping gas it to parts unknown.

No problem being extra sure. I've had absolutely no personal exposure to crossfire, so everything I "know" is what I've heard around here. And, crossfire isn't the most popular system out there in general.

Let us know what you find.

Oh, brake line is fine. That's what I've used myself on several occasions. I just prefer working with the aluminum stock.

Ok I got this part in the mail and thought I could just put in on but there are a lot of holes and it didn’t come with any fitting.
So using my photo
1.Is the adjust setting. Do I need to do anything it?
2.vacuum boost do I need this and where do I pull the vaucuum from?
3,4,5 I need to plug up. What is that fitting called?
6 I need a fitting that goes to 3/8
7 need a fitting that goes to 5/16

1. You need to have a gage on the outlet and adjust the pressure to 4-6 psi.
2. You don't need to attach that to vacuum. It's there to let the pressure rise as manifold pressure rises in boosted (turbo, supercharger) applications.
3., 4., 5. Pipe plug. Or, use one to mount the pressure gage you'll need for #1.
6., 7. You can use either AN flared fittings, or hose nipple fittings.

I hooked it up today and the pressure gauge is pulsing rapidly from 5 -6 PSI. I had the pressure gauge hooked up to the hose that feeds the carburetor. So the engine wasn’t running it was just a test.

Now what is my next step?

Also I siphoned all the old gas out and put in of fresh gas so there is about 2 gallons in there. And the drive way is on a slight incline. Could that be the pulse problem the hose isn’t picking it up?
