Noob Carb question
Noob Carb question
Hello. i'm a noob. And this is my first question. I read the faq but didnt find my answer
If i remove the Tpi system on a L98 and replace it with 650carb
car has basic bolt ons I/H/E,
will i get less power or more ?..i assume i would lose mileage, but that doesnt matter all that much

Re: Noob Carb question
You'll probably gain a bit of power in the top end, assuming you use a decent intake manifold, and a good distributor as well.

TPI usually wins hands down for low end. After 4000RPM you can do loads better with a carb.

Re: Noob Carb question
You are incorrect here. TPI system can make power beyound 5000 RPMs. Requires free flowing exhust system, etc. but it can be done. Installing a carb in place of an TPI system is just plain stupid. As a matter of fact its against the fed law unless the car will only be used for off-road.

Not quite, stock it's not all that great, but with a little work it can do very nicely. The carb will get you easy tuning and it won't be limited by a computer... it will also suck a little more fuel and ultimately won't be able to achieve quite the same level of power as a perfectly tuned fuel injection system will... but personally I much prefer carbs for their ease of tune and technical simplicity.

Re: Noob Carb question
That's really a matter of opinion... and as for the legality, some states really don't care what injection system you use and after a certain age none of the emissions really matter to any state. In 5 years my car will be completely exempt from all emissions standards and I'll be able to ditch the cat and any other items I feel are a burden to the performance of my engine... hell at 25+ years it could be a helicoptor motor for all they care.

Free flowing EXHAUST helps the TPI flow above 5000RPM? Uhh, ok, sure, go with that.
You can replace the intake manifold itself with a super ram or mini ram or the like, but then it's not TPI anymore is it? Also, price that out and come back to me, you'll agree a carb is just peachy.
It's a pretty well established truth, that dollar for dollar, a carbed car is faster. Period.
If you value the slight change in mileage, and other injection benefits, than it can be worthwhile to pay more for an upgrade FI setup.
But lets not get into an age old argument (besides this is the carb board, take your TPI lovin' over to the TPI board
). To answer his original question, a lightly modded L98 (want to delve into what mods are done?) would most likely create more power on the dyno graph with the right carb, vs leaving it as is.

guys..i just basically want to have more power on a budget..so i thought a carb setup would be ideal.so that when i buy performance parts, im getting the most out of my setup
here in montreal we dont have to pass emissions..the only law is that we cant get rid of any emmission equipment in our exhaust line..cat..resonator....and we cant make the exhaust louder than stock
but who the hell knows that the iroc had 4 cats,,,nobody
this law is made basically for the noisy ***** cars around
