Carb sizing....

Hey guys I had a quick question regarding my carb choice I just ordered a 600 cfm edelbrock carb and I just wanted to see if it was too small for my 400 cid engine Im usually a TBI guy but I desided to build up a carbed motor for my own reasons. Anyway I had some other work done to it (square bore preformer RPM Air gap intake MSD digital 6 ignition MSD distributor and a few other things) and I was just wondering if it will be fine or choke the motor. Thanks for the help if it wasnt for you guys I wouldnt have gotten so far in my build

Re: Carb sizing....

stockish build or a little hotter?

Its probably going to be a bit small either way though. But dont expect performance out of the carb anyways, they perform best on the showroom floor...

Re: Carb sizing....

Really I was told the edelbrock carbs where a good choice I was planning on going with a 750 or an 800 cfm, its going to be a 450ish horsepower at the wheels if Im lucky enough to get the parts and what not that I want, but cash is the limiting factor on all this. I just wanted to make sure that it was in fact too small but it was recomended to me that I went with the 600 and I wish I had ordered the bigger one, so I take it a no on the edelbrock then what would be a good choice at a 200ish price range.

"$200 carburetor" doesn't belong in the same sentence (or paragraph, for that matter) with 450 HP at the wheels.

Re: Carb sizing....

You should be looking at more like $350-$400 for a carb for that engine.

Personally I love the Performer carbs for one reason, you take one out of the box, put it on top of the engine, turn a couple screws and you never have to touch it again (usually). But some people will argue holley or demon till they're blue in the face just because they saw a chart that showed it put out 10 more Hp at 7000 RPM. For a 400 CI engine I'd probably look at a Performer #1411 and grab a tuning kit to help maximize performance.

Re: Carb sizing....

From personal experience on mine and other peoples motors, i would choose a holley over edeljunk any day!

Even after ALOT of tinkering around with the edelbrock carbs, we still could not get ANY of them to operate exactly how we liked. We all ended up buying different models of holleys and out-of the-box the holleys were a night and day difference over those edelbrocks we had all been tinkering with for countless hours.

Anyways, lets not get this into another edeljunk vs holley thread, im sure the vast majority of people here know who the winner is...

I'm not a brand loyalist and I'm not going to blindly defend Edelbrock, but I don't think you can deny the run out of the box reputation that Edelbrock has. I think it would be beneficial to state what exactly you were tuning for and what characteristics you found that the Edelbrocks couldn't achieve. I'm just throwing this out there to help get a better picture of what the positives of Holley carbs are.

Look at summitracing.com. You can get guaranteed re-manufactured Holley double pumpers for about that much.
