Failed Emissions

My 357ci motor failed...badly. My nox was like 2500+ with a limit of 300. I've had the carb adjusted, tried making a vacuum leak to see if it would lean it out a bit but it still smells like fuel. Sometimes you can't smell it but other times you smell the unburnt fuel and exhaust mixture. What gives? Mods are ported 327 heads, Torquer cam and intake with a 10:1 c/r. Please help. If I can't get it running right then there goes my summer with the car.

That's your answer right there (assuming you mean "Torker cam and intake").

Re: Failed Emissions

Why is that the problem? Would upgrading to 750cfm help? I plan on getting a XE274 cam and some form of dual plane intake eventually but if my current parts are the problem, I'm all for spending the cash to get the car running properly. Any intake suggestions?

The cam is a high-overlap, low-LSA, old-school design that is death to low-RPM emissions. The intake is a single plane design for high-RPM operation that kills low-RPM vacuum, which has similar effects on clean emissions.

An XE274 is going to be marginal for emissions. XE268 would be better. Performer would be best, but not the best match for the 274.

You've got some compromises to choose between.

Re: Failed Emissions

What are the specs on the XE268, isn't that smaller? Performer for intake? Wouldn't the RPM air gap be better? I might be using E-TEC heads eventually so I don't want to go out and buy more parts later.

268 smaller than 274? Yes.

RPM Air Gap better than Performer? Not with regard to emissions.

What are you trying to do, build something that performs, or build something that passes emissions? One limits the other.

Re: Failed Emissions

Emissions is such a pain in the ***.

I want to build a semi-serious street car. My plan was to use the XE274 cam, some form of Vortec head and either an RPM air gap or Dominator intake. Then I got to thinking of using a Supercharger. What would you suggest cam wise for a S/C motor? 9:1-9.25:1 c/r? Probably run around 8psi. So many ideas out there and my mind keeps wrapping around them.

Re: Failed Emissions

I know this isnt the correct answer... but around here knowing someone with a shop helps alot... Alot of times friends of friends could get it to pass for a lil extra money. Maybe ask around on the locals boards to see if someone could do you a favor. If you lived in NY I know i could help you out... Sorry for not being knowledgable about how to pass it legally but i would hate to see someone not have a summer with an awesome car because of emmisions laws.

What's your definition of "semi-serious"? A little over 300 HP at the wheels? 13.3's in the quarter with highway gears and full creature comforts? If so, see sig.

S/C isn't going to be emissions legal on a carb, at least not if you have any kind of under-hood equipment visual inspection.

Re: Failed Emissions

I passed etest here in ontario with my motor. vortec headed 355 running a comp XE276HR holley 750 VS and a wieand performer style intake. The 276HR im running is on a 110LSA. Its also a roller cam which helps. The XE268H should pass as long as the motor is in tune. What type of carb are you running? Getting past the test is really what should be your focus for now. Have the basic tune up things been done to the car? New plugs, dist. cap and rotor? Timing been set correctly? As far as new parts go, an intake is only going to set you back $100-$200 or so. Use something that will pass the test and then worry about getting the "right" one after. Same goes for the cam. You can probably find something that will work well for both (ie that will pass emissions and make decent power), like the xe268h cam.

Re: Failed Emissions

True say. I don't have any spare cash for the car at the moment so it will sit until I have time for it. Thanks for the response guys.

Re: Failed Emissions

I have seen where people have jetted WAY down(almost TOO lean) in order to pass emissions and then go straight home and jet back up. Cant say if it works but its worth a shot. Alabama has no inspection so i'm not up to speed on the ways to side step that.
