Getting prepped for carb conversion, just need a little info
What I've got:
88 Iroc, 350 TPI/700R4
I'm getting prepped for my carb swap, and yes I've read the tech article.
I'm just wondering if anyone had any additional information that the article didn't cover. Things like how your engine performed after the swap. Any increases or decreases?
Also, I assume that my engine is not only setup in the intake but the block too. Things like the cam and lifters. Will the stock setup run a carb without problems, or will I notice any difference?
Just basicly looking for anyone who has done the swap, and had some general advice or info regarding things not covered in the tech article.
Also, I would LOVE some suggestions as to...
What kind of Intake.
What kind of Carb.
Dropping the fuel tank and changing the pickup. And even going to an external fuel pump. Or anyone who just used a regulator on the fuel lines. What worked best.
Thinking of just using reliable HEI, but if another system is around the same price and better...?
Any problems with the PVC and brake boost?
Suggestions for the tranny lockup?
Anything I missed completely...??
All suggestions are welcome. I spent about an hour searching, but just couldn't find the info I was lookin for.
Thanks mates!

Your cam and lifters will work fine.
An Edelbrock Performer RPM, Weiand Stealth, or some similar intake would be good.
Carb choice is somewhat a matter of personal preference. A Holley DP would probably be the best for performance.
Lots of people have just used a regulator with the stock pump. The Mallory 4309 is a popular choice.
PCV, brake booster and other vacuum accessories will work just like always (provided you don't get a racing carb that doesn't have PCV).
There are a number of ways to handle the TCC. Everything from a switch that you remember to turn on and off, to any number of aftermarket wiring kits, to custom arrangements you can make youself with GM parts.

Well since the intake will be off, maybe it's time for a new cam. Suggestions for a cam that allows me to leave the heads right as they are?

I don't know offhand what the max lift would be on your heads. You could probably put something like an XR258 in without running into trouble, but you'd want to check clearances.

Thank you, I'll look into those and post back with any other questions I've got. The reality is, it's a pretty easy swap especially to get rid of the aircare, EFI, and all the needless sensors.

There aren't actually any "needless" sensors, they all serve a purpose to the EFI system. If that's not your cup of tea though, then what the heck. I have a carbed car and a TPI car so I don't have to decide.

put a cam in you'll thank yourself when your done. the cam swap is the primary reason i went to carb. because i didnt know how to play with the chip to make it work with tpi and i didnt want to spend the three hundred to get one custom made.

Yup that's me for sure. When I look at my engine all I see is a mass of vaccum and wires, things I know nothing about. When I look at my old chevy truck with a carb'ed 305... It's just safe to me.
I just want to stick with what I know, and i know carbs a hell of a lot more than i know anything about EFI. For me, it's out with sensors and wires, and in with belts and bolts. Sounds good to me.
EDIT:
I see you have a xe268 cam, do you know if this will work with my stock heads?

Check out Jegs' Street/Strip HEI Dist. I just did the swap and went with that one and it works great. Also, love my Demon so far. Don't worry about changing the pickup, just get the afpr and a gauge and call it good. I bought some Jeg's steel braided line and fittings and ran that from the frame rail over to the carb.

Re: Getting prepped for carb conversion, just need a little info
Actually yes, my tune was never that great with TBI. Did the mail in chip thing for a while, got tired of it and left it alone. I went from a best of 14.96 @ 91 mph to what you see in my sig. I'm still not tuned 100% with the carb but it's defineatly better. I'm playing with the jetting right now. Having an electric choke instead of whatever my tbi did during warmup is great. It idles at 1800rpm and falls to 800 when I tap the throttle. TBI would surge and sometimes die until it was warm. I couldn't be happier. It pulls smoother all the way up to 6000 rpm also.

You could put a flat tappet cam in a roller block, but it would be a waste.

Re: Getting prepped for carb conversion, just need a little info
FWIW I ran a mechanical fuel pump because it came with the engine/trans I bought. I'm now wishing I had just spent the extra $80 and bought the Mallory 4309 and been done with it.
