Can't be done, without cutting the fuel lines too. They are LONG, go forward, over to the drivers sider, then down, before the first connection you can undo.
But, isn't your 82 carb'd anyways? No engine mounted fuel pump?
I found this pic awhile back, showing the fuel lines won't allow it to come up, unless to cut the lines.

Here ya go....Pics showing the cut lines...

Ignore the "hack-job" comment. Pull up your rear carpet, cut the hole, make a new hatch cover, ad go to town. "Hack Job" comments, are only made by those who wish they had know about this way, instead of spending hours draining their tanks, dropping their tank, when they could have been done under an hour, without ever getting under the car.

Re: 82 Z-28 fuel pump removal with out tank removal
Thanks for the link to those pict.s they should help, I did the same thing to my 95 firebird when that pump went out, I just didn't know where to cut on this one, and if you clean edges of cut and cover the bare metal with paint then make a nice metal patch use metal screws and blunt ends, I don't see any problems. A person should roll the carpet back out of the way and not cut a hole in that. There are alot of cars that have panels to acess their fuel pumps right from the factory, I don't know why they didn't do it with any of these Thanks Again

Re: 82 Z-28 fuel pump removal with out tank removal
Mine has never smelled like gas. A previous owner cut the floor out, and doesn't even have a cover. It's wide open. I've had the car for 2 years ow. No fumes, no structural loss, no collapsing of sheet metal. ZERO downside to it, other than others calling it a "hack job".
When my dies on the road, and I'm done fixing mine on the road in 30 minutes, and they're paying towing costs and crawling under the car for 6 hours....I'll be the one laughing.
Let's not turn this into a pissing match. Some people do things one way, others do things another. Let's just leave it at that. There has been like 6 pages of "hack job" comments on that other thread, let's not waste sever space again.

as far as doing the job right, I think this is the right way because now I will have an acess for the next time I need to get into change the pump and as far as smelling gas inside the car I think that would be a different problem when the fuel lines are conected and the clamp ring is on the tank properly the only time you should smell gas is when you are filling the tank. This is Just My

Re: 82 Z-28 fuel pump removal with out tank removal
I did my 1989 bird by cutting the hole in the floor and did my 1984 bird the correct way and it is least time too just drop the tank.
When you have to cut the lines to pull out the top it take a long time with a hack saw blade as you don't have any room to use a tubing cutter. And it is a pain trying to get all the small hoses and clamps in place, as once again no room between the lines. I will never do it out the top again.

Re: 82 Z-28 fuel pump removal with out tank removal
I rolled the carpet back and cut the hole, and fixed what I needed to in the fuel tank, spliced the fuel lines, made a cover for the hole, put the carpet back and had it running in about 2 hours and 15 min. next time I have to get in there it will take me 15 or 20 min.s max.
my orignal question was:
"anyone have any links showing how to removing the fuel pump from an 82 Z-28 by cutting a hole above the fuel tank and removing it that way"
But it is all done and over with now so we can let it rest My Thanks to all that helped me get-er-done this way.
