poor gas mileage

 :imo:i have a 1973 mercury cougar xr7 with a 351 cleveland, edlebrock intake, msd distributor, msd 6 ignition system, msd master blaster 2 coil, msd 8.5 spark plug wires, flowmaster 40 duel exhaust, and a 670 cfm holley street avenger, and yet i am getting 7 mpg and driving it like a baby most of the driving is hwy driving. just wondering if there is anyone out there that can give me some suggestions on what i can do all parts are new and the car only gets driven form work and back wich is roughly 15 miles a day.

Re: poor gas mileage

Well this is a thirdgen Camaro/Firebird board, so your post is going to get locked because it's about an other kind of car.

However:

You have one of the BADDEST motors ever made. The exhaust ports in the heads are SO BIG, a big block Chevy cast-iron exhaust manifold will almost go up inside them. That is one of the all-time EASIEST motors to make go fast.

I know, because my late little brother had one in a 71 Latrino he had back in about 76 or so, for about 2 or 3 years. He put it in when the original 351C 2-bbl broke its crank.

It also is LEGENDARY for terrible gas mileage. Power comes from burning fuel, you know.

I'd suggest selling it to somebody that wants a hot-rod setup, which that motor right there is one of the very best, except that the bolt pattern is different from other Frods, neither a C4 nor a C6 will fit it, let alone the AOD. But I can about guarantee you, SOMEBODY will pay plenty for that year of a 351C 4-bbl.
