I've been saying this for years, and I stand by it:

"For a given amount of money, you can make a 305 faster than you can by putting in a 350."

Up to a point. . .

Well, a couple of points, actually. One cross-over point is when you spend a dime rebuilding the shortblock (pistons, rings, bearings, crank, rods - any of those). Once you're to that point, go find a 350 shortblock and rebuild it.

The other point is when you make a potent engine that won't hold together with a stock shortblock - i.e., when you have to spin it so hard that rod bolts get stressed, things like that. See "rebuilding the shortblock" above.

So, go ahead and build your 305, just don't do anything that won't transfer over to a 350, or anything that requires money spent on the shortblock.

There is a thread in the FAQ forum about differences between 305's and performance improvements. Check that out for what to do to get the most out of your 305 within the bounds of the paragraphs above.
