yay another tpi to carb (fuel pump)

im searching all the stickys and notes as you read this, i have learned that i am way more mechanicly inclined than cpu., so ive decided to switch to a carb system. I was wondering something though, i have not seen (yet) anyone mention putting a manual fuel pump on, can i do this? reason being is that i have about 10 of them laying around and i have a budjet. that wuold also eliminate the beed for a regulator wouldnt it?

Car,
1988 t/a 350 cammed currently tpi
auto 700r4

mallory 4309 is $85? sell some of those mechanical pumps...OR drop the tank, remove the intank pump, fab up your own similar design carb pickup tube and then hook up the mechanical pump. For how long it takes to drop the tank, I'd rather just spend the money and get something that won't vapor lock.

You can put a mechanical pump on and feed it with the in-tank electric, as long as it's a stock-type mechanical pump with a return. This is the setup GM used to fix vapour lock problems, first as a dealer-installed repair and later as a factory setup.

Re: yay another tpi to carb (fuel pump)

o yeah ive read about 5 so far, it seems that people can quite get the presure down to 3 psi this way, say i keep my stock pump, add the mallory, is there a carb out there that can handle 7-13 psi that you know of?
----------
an last question on the carb side, what would be best to look at from a tpi point of view with auto tranny? i think holley makes a 700ry bracket to utilize my kickdown but not cruise correct?

thanks

yea you can get the mallory down to 5-7psi no problem. As for the carb brackets, holley makes them but your cruise is gone.

For convenience, you should just put on a mechanical pump that you already have, as long it's the right type. You wouldn't get any additional benefit from buying a regulator.

Re: yay another tpi to carb (fuel pump)

thanks for replys, i wouldnt want that much psi, just wondering if i couldnt get the fuel low enough if there was a carb that operated around there.

looking at my suply of pumps, i dont belive i have anything that will work. my box labeled sbc fuel pump is really dodge fuel pump. o well.

one last question. (for right now any way) i saw it asked a few times but not answered, where is the easiest place to put the regulator, do i have a stock one that just swaps out somewhere in the mix or will i need to cut lines and add hoses?

Re: yay another tpi to carb (fuel pump)

You'll need to so some plumbing however you do it. The regulator should go as close to the carb as possible, and somewhere relatively cool (eg. not mounted to the exhaust manifold).

LMAO
yeah my engine bay is neat new and clean. it would be going somewhere easy to use and not an eyesore. so i dont jam up threads id like to start a new topic in this one,

"what i have and where to go"

Currently i am running a roller 350 TPI with stock heads opened to the typical 2.02 /1.60 and `1.5 crane roller rockers. camwise i run a compcams .474 lift .....230 234 duration 111 lsa 700r4 trans with 2400 stall

what i want.
what carbs shold i be looking for? i have a holey 650 on my 84 truck and love it so id like holey.

intake.. i have no clue what intake would match up to centerbolt (083) heads, any ideas

distributor. all i know is i need a vaccume advance , do i need hei still? throw me some ideas for a roller cam if posible.

we covered the fuel

Transmission,. i know i will be loosing lockup, witch will cause a lot of heat, will i need to add the jumper in termanals or do you think that a trans coller will help keep temps down?

computer--- ill be leaving it in for spedo and such, engine wise all il be loosing is fan temp controll right? (i have no somg or a/c) also, woulnt i loose controll to my fuel pump wich brings up back to post 1

did i forget anything??
