air cleaner questions

air cleaner questions

i was wondering if its better to have a open element type of air cleaner or a cold air intake, like the one below ?

I can't see the photos in the link, but any sort of direct cold air path is
much better than an open element.

Depending on the design of the CAI, the air may still heat up, but not as
much as under hood heat. There are things you can do to minimize the
heat transfer if you want it even colder (wraps, coatings, routing, etc.).

Every degree cooler allows for less chance of detonation, and higher oxygen
density for best performance.

That link looks like it is just a different version of an under hood open element. Would not make any difference.

For a firebird the only cold air solution i know of is the induction hood they had in 83-84 for the L69.

oh yeah, I see the photos now. It's just a cone filter connected to a plastic
hub.

The air entry would have to be remote and away from the heat of the engine
compartment to make any difference.

i was going to make a pipe so the filter would be at the stock air box location.the probably have them with pipes but its just the first i saw.
