600 To BIG?

I have a brand new holley 600 CFM i replaced my old junky edelbrock 650. Now my car seems doggy when i punch it and it struggles to brake rise, it seems like a pretty strong 305 though. Someone said the car is like this because 600 is too much and I should put on a 450.?

Re: 600 To BIG?

The size of the carb will have nothing to do with it.

Re: 600 To BIG?

well i have someone that swears that its getting too much air and not enough exhaust, I have factory manifolds and 82 factory exhaust was terrible its always been a dog, but the quadrajet wasnt that bad either.

Re: 600 To BIG?

Have you gone through and set the carb for your motor? Floats, idle mixture, acc pump and pump cams, jets and power valve? You have about a 1 in 10,000 chance that the carb is set perfect for your motor right out of the box.

Re: 600 To BIG?

My stocker 305 ran great with the 600cfm I had on it, did take tuning to get it perfect though like has been said. Though it was good, it wasn't anywhere near out of the box jetting.

Re: 600 To BIG?

well its not out of the box, my friend messed with it, but im not sure if hes 100 percent correct esp if my timings off too, I KNOW that would between the two cause the car to be sleddy.

Re: 600 To BIG?

Any time I get a used carb I always make sure it's back to the factory specs for a good baseline and tune from there.

Here are a few good sites to read and learn how to set up the carb. Most of this stuff is pretty straight forward and easy. The thing that takes the longest is if you want the jets perfect.

Re: 600 To BIG?

Well being your bog comes when you punch it, the fact that the CFM of the q-jet is 750 stock and a 600 Holley is right in line with your needs...I would say that its not setup right.
Timing, Squirters, Accel Pump Cam(s) are some things that play a role in the carb having bogs.
I recommend goiing to the library or bookstore and checking out a book on Rebuild and Tuning a Holley carb. You will find it very explanatory on the different situations and the things you need to do to tune it right.

Do you know what model or series it is?

Re: 600 To BIG?

whoever told you the 600 is too big was smoking crack. You need to set it up properly. First adjust fuel pressure if electric pump. Then set float levels. Set idle speed. Set idle mixture screws. Do that and report back.

It's a mechanical fuel pump... how do I set float levels? where should they be at... what should idle speed be? and how to i set idle mix and where are they?

These should help:

idle mixture:

idle speed:

General info:

Fire it up, remove the sight plug from the fuel bowl, if gas is pouring out the float is too high, you want it to just drip out. You can raise/lower the float with the nut on top of the fuel bowl. Do this to both fuel bowls. turn your idle screws in all the way and back out 2 turns. Adjust idle speed and set idle mixute for best vacuum at idle.

I think this is the plan, disconnect vacuum advance, time the car to about 10 degrees advance with the light then hook it back up. let it warm up, check the fuel bowls and set that, then do the idle mixture and get the best possible vaccuum from them each? (how do I check each and where to i put the gauge on>? and also i do this in drive?) then set curb idle (in drive)... what should that be at for a 305, small cam, intake and a soon to have exhaust....?

Re: 600 To BIG?

I don't do it in drive even though it says you should for an auto just do it in park. Idle speed around 750-800. Connect the vac gauge to a port on the intake. The video explains it pretty good.

Re: 600 To BIG?

it is pretty good and I appreciate the help and 750-800 in park or drive? wheres there a port on the intake? I still dont get the mixture process, i do 1 at a time till i get the best vacuum possible total after screwing it in fully, then indoing it 1 and a half turns and from there fine tune it?
