Which do I choose new carb or engine?
Hey guys I have a 86 trans am with a computer controled quaderjet. I would love to get more power from it. But I would like to put a bigger carb on it and a high rise intake. Can this be done with this carb? Were could I find the parts. Or is it easier to pull the carb and computers and start with new ones? On onther note my timing is electroniclly controled to is this good or bad I seem to be desaling out at least three times a week this is my daily driver. And thanks for any help at all!!!

That Q-jet will flow plenty for any 305 and probably enough for most modded 350's. The stock intake flows excellent for the way the engine is tuned, torque. An aftermarket intake may reap some benefits but it should be a 2 plane design. You can also adjust that carb with different jets, hangers,& metering rods as well as how quickly the secondaries open using an allen wrench and small flat blade screwdriver.

well that is a function of timing. i think you have a vacuume advance on yours so its possible that your advance is not working properly. it only need to be off a hair for the timing to cause the problem.

Dieseling is likely caused by a vacuum leak. Your timing won't cause a run on condition-the ignition is shut down when the key is turned to off.
Your stock distributor is computer controlled. You can't get rid of the ccc-qjet without also replacing the dist and installing another means for converter lock up. For info try:

The computer system, carb and ignition, is the last thing to change when upgrading performance. When you do that, you now have a track-only car.
Excessively advanced ignition can cause dieseling by creating hot spots in the combustion chamber. Most likely, though, you've got things mis-adjusted. Get it all operating and adjusted to factory spec, including insuring you have no vacuum leaks, and your problem will go away.
