help choosing a carb
i need a carb for my 383 build. and preferably a manifold aswell. but just to let you know more about the engine its going into ill describe everything done so far.
010 block 2 bolt mains
scat steel crank stroker kit
scat 6 inch rods
kb signature hypereutectic pistons
no cam as of yet, but shooting for a good weekend cam
no heads as of yet either but shooting for about 10 to 1 static compression ratio.
the engine is going into an 86 iroc with a freshly built 700r4
im building this in class and my teacher has recommended me to get an edelbrock performer rpm gap manifold and edelbrock carb aswell. he said the carb is easy to bolt on and tune. but im looking for some second opinions since im looking for the most bang for my buck and want a relative low maintanance carb. this car will be driven daily, about 10 miles a day. and about 100 miles to the local strip.

Seeing as how you live in CA and plan on driving this on the street, the only emissions legal choice you have is a computer controlled Rochester Quadrajet. The Bay area I assume to be "Enhanced" enforcement. To be emissions compliant you will have to claim that you transplanted a motor (350cid) from a 1986 or 1987 carbed passenger car. This swap will have to be approved by a State smog referee, then pass smog tests for the vehicle from which the engine was transplanted. I have no specific cam recommendations other than to keep it mild considering your situation. Intake manifold must be CARB approved for the donor vehicle.

oh no, im asking for a carb that will bring me the best performance and reliability, emissions legality doesnt matter.

im doin the same thing converting over to carb. But im lookin for 350+ HP..so im droppin the Holley StreetAvenger 770cfm in mine...heres the link to it and Holley's page...
just from experience, I'd go with a Holley performance carb than edelbrock..jus bcuz u can tune it alot more efficiently. but it takes a lil bit more time

A well modified Q-Jet would work, but most folks would go with a Holley. An 850 or even 750( http://www.holley.com/0-3310C.asp ) would work well with the Performer RPM.
Try to use a tall dual plane or even the VictorJR would be okay.
The cam will kind of dictate what intake and carb you need...or you will have to base the cam around the intake and carb you choose.
What type of performance are you looking to get out of this setup?

im looking for around mid 400's in terms of horsepower. but i also wanna keep it streetable so i can drive it daily. the drive to work home and school is less than 10 miles but the race track is over 70 miles away so i kinda wanna get decent mpg.
right now for the cam ive decided on something around 260/270 with 113 lsa

first of all... no on the vict. jr. not unless you get a cam bigger than ~230-235@.050 duration...
rpm or stealth intake... and i only use holley type carbs... you can 95% of time pick up 10-15 or more hp and torque with properly tuned holley... the street avengers are great... i go d.p.

on a budget get a used 750 d.p (bigger would be silly unless you rev over 7000) off ebay or a board... rebuild if necessary (really not hard)
double pumpers get horrible gas milage though (atleast i do, my foot to heavy...)
might be little more econmoical (but more expensive) for a street avenger....
and they have electric chokes (have NEVER used a choke in any performance motor i have built..) just don't idle right away and drivability little crappy till warmed up...
don't take long though
