Ok, new member here, just got an '85 Z28, only 64000 miles. It clicked in my head this thing has been sitting in a garage for 10 years, so i should prob. change the fuel filter... after doing so I was having one heck of a time getting the fuel filter housing to screw back into the carb, kept going in at an angle, so i said screw it, drove it to the local mechanic to fix it (while it's spewing gas everywhere on the road).

long story short, I stripped the inside of the carb while trying to get the filter housing in, so now I have to buy a whole new carb! Any suggestions on a possible way to fix this without needing to? the carb looks great! it's garage kept and like no rust, so i really don't want to get rid of a great looking factory carb thats 25 years old, nor do I wanna drop $400 on a new one.

IF there isn't a way, then where can i get a cheap carb? I can't find one locally at the junk yard, no camaros in that year with a carb. I have to assume this carb was used on more than just camaros though, so what years and models did chevy use it on? or what other models from chevy's will still fit on the 305 ?

if I can't do anything then i guess it's a new carb aftermarket.

Probably a quadrajet carb. I think they went out of business and came back with a different name. They may have gone out of business all togather. Im not sure on this though. Look on ebay and see if you can find a used one. Im assuming its got a v8 in the car correct? good luck

 

ok when i go to ebay there are a bunch of qjets, ones for camaros in the 60s, ones for buicks, i know which one is for my car, but i can't find it, will any of them do ? i don't wanna grab one and see that the screw locations are in the wrong place etc. and if i can go with any of them, which one is more recommended?

 

ok, to be more specific, I know i need an e4me, but i just don't know how to idintify one, or which cars came with one.... when i go to the junk yard i'm going to completely lost, and affraid i'm gonna buy a carb that looks the same but doesn't work... how can i tell the difference between an e4me and an e4mc for example ? and anyone have a link that lists all the cars that has e4me's in them?

 

There are a few options:

1) See if your parts store can get you a self-tapping inlet nut of the correct type. I've used this before, but you will need to disassemble the carb so you can clean up the shavings that will be created. So, get a rebuild kit while you're at it.

2) Have the body heli-coiled. I've never done this, and only heard about it from a Google search. I don't know if this is really an option.

3) Get a used or rebuilt carb. Depending upon your confidence level, a used one may be a way to save money. But, I did a quick eBay search and didn't find any used ones being offered for sale. Rebuilds ranged from $215 to $345. Summit carries a Jet rebuilt for $400.

4) Email sales@carbs.net . They have a bunch of stuff, and may be able to advise you on the best fix in your situation.

5) Wait until I no longer need mine. . .

Hasn't even had the anti-tamper plugs removed. But, I'd assume the seller is correct and it needs a good cleaning and rebuild.

Oh, these carbs were also used on the full size sedans (Caprice, Pontiac Parisenne (sp?), Buick Roadmaster in the early 80's), a couple of years of light trucks (like '85-'88), Monte Carlo, etc. Olds also used them on 307's, but I'm not sure the linkage was the same.

 

Nize2beme, where r u located? I have a non cc q-jet I am running right now that has the fuel filter housing heli-coiled, no problems at all. I also have a cache of cc q-jets and may be willing to part with one. It will however need rebuilt. Or if you prefer I could send you just a q-jet body, which would entail you taking your carb apart and re-assembling with the replacement body. If you are good with q-jets they can offer a tremendous amout of performance for very little money. Luv them q-jets!
