4160 vs edelbrock
just contemplating which one to go with. i have a mild built 350 and have both a 600 cfm 4160 and a 600 cfm edelbrock on hand. previously ran the edelbrock but lookin to see if the holley would make any more power. Any ideas

Holley, easier to tune and modify and always made more power. The Edelbrock is mostly just a carter repop.

Re: 4160 vs edelbrock
ya the edelbrock did seem like junk i only ask because i was so blown away by the performance of my demon i put on my racecar it kinda leaned me towards holleys. I just don't know much about the 4160's.

You can tune a Holley for more HP but prepare to tune alot and rebuild alot. With an Edelbrock you can upgrade for cheap and easy and no muss no fuss with the tuning.

Re: 4160 vs edelbrock
The Demon is a good carb but it is basically a Holley Clone. The 4160 is a great street carb. I threw one on my 73 Satelite 400 mopar big block straight out of the box and it ran great till I sold the car 10 years later. Never touched it except to set the float level and the idle. I recomend them highly.

Re: 4160 vs edelbrock
ya i can relate to that my demon needs to be tuned just about every two races but to me it's worth it but it also seems with the edelbrock i was never able to really get it tuned right either

Re: 4160 vs edelbrock
Wow shouldn't need that much tuning. For the 4160 I would recommend getting the Holley manual. Once you get it set up, right jets power valve etc float level, which is easy to do, you shouldn't need to touch it again.

well i'm exaggerating a little bit we we race at a lot of different elevations so some tuning is inevitable. Does anyone have an idea for a good starting point

Re: 4160 vs edelbrock
What intake and what cam is in the motor? My 670 Truck avenger on top of my 350 (standard bore, world s/r heads, torker 2 intake, crane 228 cam) Likes 72/78 jets with a 35 squirter. Yours probably has a 28 on it which may work as well.

Re: 4160 vs edelbrock
That cam is pretty close to mine (480/480 286/286, but im running 1.6 rockers so its now 515/515). Modest dual planes like your eps wont need much fuel, but im personally not sure about the need for more jet with a 600 vs a 670. Does your 600 have an adjustable vac secondary? If not i would reccomend one, my truck avengers stock spring isnt cutting it when i slam it down, so i got more springs on the way. As Far as a starting point, 70/72 primaries is a good starting point. Jet up 4-6 sizes on the secondaries, then tune via the sticky.
Best of luck

What will you be using this car for? Need more details, such as transmission, stall if auto, gears, etc.
That's a lot of cam for a street car, and too much for the intake. Assuming you spin the motor to 6500 RPMs, not only is the intake going to hold you back, both of those carbs are also too small.
So, my first response to your original question is "neither". But, if you insist on using one of them, I'd say go with the Holley. Then, the first thing you do is convert it to 4150 so you can rejet the secondaries. The second thing is to get the Quick Fuel adjustable secondary housing - don't waste your time with springs, the method the adjustable housing uses is the only right way to tune a vacuum secondary Holley.

Re: 4160 vs edelbrock
I just want a fun street car i can take to the track if i want.... but probably never will cause thats what my third gen is for. i'm runnin a 5 speed 3.73 gears. I planned on using a little better intake but right now i'm just workin with what i got. I'm probably only planning on turnin 5000 rpm anyway after all it is just a gm crate 350 with stock heads even.
I did see the 4150 secondary metering block kit in summit and was planning on going that route

Re: 4160 vs edelbrock
Learn new things everyday, my truck avenger has jets in the secondaries. Thanks five7kid for pointing out a better option, im working with what i already have (quick change secondary spring housing). By the time you do all the work to the carb though, you can get a 4150 thats been rebuilt by holley for just a little more. Hell, we have a guy that runs a summit mechanical secondary carb here in town with excellent feedback on it. The one thing i like is no gaskets below the fuel level. Just some food for thought.
